DVLA brings in ‘extremely popular’ new services to make drivers’ lives easier
The driving agency is introducing a raft of changes encompassing car tax and driving licences.
Last year it launched the Drivers and Vehicles account which allows users to view their driving licence information and the tax and MOT status of their vehicles in one place for the first time.
Building on this, March 2025 will see the launch of the Share My Licence service, which allows drivers to generate a share code for their licence, which can be used for a variety of purposes including to confirm licence information with car hire companies.
The DVLA wants to increase its online services for drivers and may introduce the capability for vocational drivers - eg HGV drivers - to apply to renew their licence online through its Driver and Vehicles account, as early as December this year.
Writing in its Business Plan for 2024-25, Julie Lennard, DVLA CEO, said: "Our many digital services are extremely popular with our customers. In the last reporting year, we dealt with 95.5 million individual customer transactions, 84% of which were processed through our digital channels.
"Digital is an area we continue to focus on, and over the last year, we have continued to invest time and effort into building the right IT operating model to ensure we have the right structure to continuously improve our digital services."
The report also noted the DVLA’s work as part of the increases in vehicle tax for electric and low emissions vehicles which comes into effect on April 1 2025.
NimbleFins previously reported EV drivers face a car tax hike up to £600 under the new rules.
The Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) will cost EV owners £190 a year, putting them on par with petrol and diesel drivers.
An additional 'luxury car tax' will be enforced on many EV drivers as the £410 levy is applied on owners of cars over £40,000.
