How To Pick a Good Pet Insurance Deal for You

While Accident Only plans are generally the cheapest, we focus here on Lifetime plans with renewing limits for both illness & injury, as they arguably offer the best long-term protection for your pet and your wallet should accident or illness strike.

Cheap Pet Insurance for Dogs

If your priority is paying less out of pocket for dog insurance, there are a number of more affordable plans costing 50% less than average, or more.

While you may get less vet cover with some of these plans or pay a higher excess in the event of a claim, or face other limitations, these plans can still provide a decent level of financial protection in case your pooch is injured or falls ill. Cheap Lifetime pet insurance for a dog can cost less than £200 a year. Even when price is paramount, you should be able to find a suitable plan for you and your beloved dog or cat.

Overall Cheap Dog Insurance: Animal Friends

Consider this if you want to pay a low premium

Range of Vet Cover £500 to £6,000 per condition
Types of Plans Accident Only, Time Limited, Max Benefit and Lifetime
Dental Cover No
Excess £99 (plus 20% for older pets)

Our research showed that Animal Friends offers some of the cheapest prices for injury & illness cover. Regardless of the type of health cover you want, Animal Friends probably offers some of the lowest premiums. How do they do it? Lower vet fee cover limits. Beyond the annual or lifetime limits (which range from £3k to Unlimited), there are further annual limits per condition.

For example, Animal Friends' cheapest Lifetime policy, "Super", has an unlimited overall annual limit, but an annual per condition limit of £1,000. That means you could claim for any number of conditions per year, but each condition would only be reimbursed up to £1,000 annually. (Similar to M&S's mid-tier Standard plan.) This level of cover would not fully pay for very serious/complicated illnesses or injuries that require thousands of pounds in vet bills in a year. But it will provide a financial buffer, such as covering recurring conditions up to £1,000 per year since the annual condition limit resets each year when you renew your policy.

Animal Friends plans do not include cover for putting your dog to sleep, a vet hotline or dental cover for injuries or illness.

Pros
  • Low premiums
  • Open to older pets
  • Premiums may not rise if you claim
Cons
  • No vetline to call with queries
  • No dental cover
  • Prescription food not covered

Cheap Dog Insurance with Dental, Vet Hotline and Euthanasia: M&S Bank

Consider this if you want a cheaper Lifetime plan with dental injury & illness.

Range of Vet Cover £3,000, £4,000 or £7,000
Types of Plans Time Limited/Max Benefit and Lifetime
Dental Cover Injury & Illness on Standard & Premier Plans; Injury only on Essential
Excess £50, £100 or £150 (or £150, £200 or £250 for pets 9 years of age or older)

There are other options if you're looking for a bit more vet cover or for additional features such as dental cover or a vet hotline. M&S Bank Standard Lifetime Plans cost around £240 with a £50 excess (or £200 with an excess of £150), for a healthy, young dog. That price gets you £4,000 of annual Lifetime vet cover, which they're able to offer at a cheaper price due to a further £1,000 per condition limit per year (e.g., an annual Max Benefit).

M&S plans come with extra features for the added cost. Vet owners can call their vet hotline with questions and euthanasia cover, plus Lifetime plans include dental injury AND illness cover.

Pros
  • Euthanasia cover
  • Vet hotline
  • Dental injury & illness on Lifetime plans
  • Lower premiums
  • M&S voucher with new Standard/Premier policies
Cons
  • Per condition limit of £1k on Standard Lifetime plan

Cheap Dog Insurance with Euthanasia: Everypaw

Consider this if you want a cheap pet insurance deal with more vet cover.

Range of Vet Cover £1,000, £2,000, £4,000, £6,000 and £10,000
Types of Plans Max Benefit/Lifetime
Dental Cover Dental injuries/accidents only except after 2 years of cover

Everypaw is another pet insurance provider offering Lifetime (and Max Benefit) plans for cheap prices—in part accomplished through "per condition per year limits" on their Lifetime plans. For example, similar to M&S, they offer a £4k Lifetime policy with a £1,000 per condition per year limit, which should cost less than £200 per year for a young, healthy, crossbreed dog (£90 excess).

There's a Petcall helpline that can be reached any time of day or night at on 0330 123 1923 with non-emergency queries. Everypaw offers an unusual feature of paying your premium in certain cases—subject to conditions, Everypaw will refund your premium for each complete 30 day period you are unable to work as a result of an accidental injury, illness or involuntary unemployment, to help you keep vet health cover even in a potentially difficult financial situation.

Everypaw Lifetime limitsMax per Condition per Year

£6,000n/a
£4,000£1,000

Pros

  • Dental injury
  • Dental illness subject to conditions (annual checks, only covered after first 2 years of cover, etc.)
  • Death Due to Illness Cover (age dependent)
  • Prescription food (stc)
  • Petcall helpline
Cons
  • No new policies for older pets (dogs 5+ or 8+, breed dependent, or cats 10+)
  • Excess rises as pets age (e.g., 25%)

Cheap Dog Insurance with Dental Illness & Euthanasia: Pet Protect

Consider this if you want a cheap pet insurance deal with more vet cover.

Range of Vet Cover £4,000 or £6,000
Types of Plans Lifetime
Dental Cover Dental illness and injury covered
Excess Increases with pet age - starting at £95 plus 5% under 1 year old

Pet Protect Lifelong Extra Plans are even cheaper—around £210 for £6k of vet cover with a £95 excess. Here you'll get dental illness and injury, plus euthanasia, but there's no vet hotline. But the excess steadily rises with your pets age, hitting £150 plus 25% - 30% for pets over 10 years old.

Pros
  • Euthanasia cover
  • Travel cover
  • Dental injury & illness cover
  • Prescription food
  • Having a longer time to claim
Cons
  • No Death Due to Illness Cover
  • No vetfone
  • No new policies for older pets (not available to dogs 6+ or 8+, breed dependent, or cats 10+)
  • Excess rises as pets age
  • Copay in addition to fixed excess

Cheaper Premium Lifetime Pet Insurance: Agria

Consider this if you want a premium plan for less.

Range of Vet Cover £6,500 or £12,500
Types of Plans Lifetime
Dental Cover Dental illness and injury covered
Excess £85 - £160, plus 10%

We like Agria plans for getting Lifetime cover with higher limits for reasonable premiums. They're able to do through a higher excess, by expecting the pet owner to contribute a bit more towards vet fees, should the need arise. In addition to a fixed excess (£85/£165 for cats or £95/£165 for dogs, your choice), you're responsible for paying 10% of vet fees after the fixed excess has been deducted.

The terms and conditions feel like they were designed by real pet owners. Expect to pay around £450 for the £12,500 Lifetime Plan or £350 for the £6,500 Lifetime Plan for a young, healthy crossbreed dog which is less than the average cost of Lifetime dog cover; the premium for a British shorthair cat would cost around £400 or £325, respectively.

Pros
  • Higher vet limits
  • Dental injury and illness
  • 6+ months to claim
Cons
  • 10% copay on top of fixed excess

Cheap Pet Insurance for Cats

Cat health insurance premiums are naturally lower than that for dogs, but there's still an opportunity to save money on the premium you pay by choosing a cheap pet insurance plan for cats. While you may get less vet cover with some of these plans or pay a higher excess in the event of a claim, or face other restrictions, these plans can still provide some protection against the financial repercussions of your cat falling ill or getting injured.

While Lifetime plans, generally considered the "best" as the limits renew each year, are typically the most expensive type of pet health insurance, Lifetime plans for a cat can be found for under £100 per year.

Overall Cheap Cat Insurance: Animal Friends

Consider this if you want to pay a low premium

Range of Vet Cover £500 to £6,000 per condition
Types of Plans Accident Only, Time Limited, Max Benefit and Lifetime
Dental Cover No
Excess £99 (plus 20% for older pets)

Animal Friends consistently offers some of the cheapest Lifetime cat insurance plans in the UK for injury & illness, with the lowest tier cover (the "Super" Lifetime plan) starting around £7 per month (less than £100 per year).

Limits are lower than you'll find on many other plans (starting at just £1,000 per condition, but renewing each year), which helps keep prices low. As you might expect on more budget plans, there's no euthanasia cover, no vet hotline and no dental cover for injuries or illness.

Pros
  • Low premiums
  • Open to older pets
  • Premiums may not rise if you claim
Cons
  • No vetline to call with queries
  • No dental cover
  • Prescription food not covered

Cheap Cat Insurance: Lifetime Pet Cover

Consider this if you want a cheap Lifetime plan with dental injury & illness, open to older pets and covering some previous medical conditions.

Range of Vet Cover £2,000, £3,000, £4,000, £6,000 and £10,000
Types of Plans Lifetime
Dental Cover Dental illness and injury covered (subject to annual checks)
Excess £99 (plus 20% for pets 7+ or 25% for pets 12+)

Lifetime Pet Cover is one of only three insurers in the UK to offer pet insurance plans for pre-existing conditions. Previous medical issues may not be considered pre-existing medical conditions if your pet has been healthy for 2 years. Specifically, a condition should be covered if a) the condition has been treated and Your Pet has fully recovered, leaving no susceptibility to future problems or underlying weakness and since that point; b) the condition has been treated and Your Pet has not received any treatment for or in connection with the condition for a continuous period of 24 calendar months; c) there are no symptoms or vet consultations relating to the condition, for the previous 24 months.

Your pet must have annual check ups, including dental. For older pets, pet owners are expected to contribute more towards the cost of vet health care. Specifically, once your pet turns 7 there is a 20% co-insurance (like a variable excess) payable after the fixed £95 excess; this jumps up to 25% for pets aged 12+.

Pros
  • Dental treatment for accident & illness
  • Open to older pets
  • Treatment of some pre-existing conditions
Cons
  • Put to sleep and burial/cremation not covered
  • Complications for treatments not related to injury/injury are not covered
  • No vet helpline to call with queries
  • Prescription food not covered

Cheap Cat Insurance: Puffin

Consider this if you want a cheap Lifetime plan with dental injury & illness, open to older pets and covering some previous medical conditions.

Range of Vet Cover £1,250, £3,500 or £4,500
Types of Plans Max Benefit and Lifetime
Dental Cover Dental illness and injury covered (subject to annual checks)
Excess £99 (plus 20% for pets 7+ or 25% for pets 12+)

Puffin Insurance.com is another provider of cheap cat insurance, with Lifetime plans providing £1,250 of annually renewing cover starting around £8 per month (£100 annually). This is only a plan for the highly organized, as you have only 31 days to submit claims from the time of treatment. The standard policy excess is £99, with owners of older pets also expected to pay a percentage-based co-insurance amount (i.e., 20% for pets 7+ or 25% for pets 12+) in addition to the fixed amount.

Both Puffin and Lifetime Pet Cover appear to offer very similar terms regarding the treatment of pre-exiting conditions, as described above. One difference between the Puffin and Lifetime Pet Insurance terms is that Puffin will cover food prescribed by your vet to dissolve existing bladder stones and crystals in urine (limited to a maximum of 40% of the cost of food for up to 6 months).

Pros
  • Some prescription food covered
  • Dental treatment for accident & illness
  • Open to older pets
  • Treatment of some pre-existing conditions
Cons
  • Only 31 days to submit claims from time of treatment
  • Put to sleep and burial/cremation not covered
  • Complications for treatments not related to injury/injury are not covered
  • No vet helpline to call with queries

Cheap Cat Insurance with Dental, Vet Hotline and Euthanasia: M&S Bank

Consider this if you want a cheaper Lifetime plan with dental injury & illness, a vet hotline and cover for putting your pet to sleep.

Range of Vet Cover £3,000, £4,000 or £7,000

Dental Cover Injury & Illness on Standard & Premier Plans; Injury only on Essential
Excess £50, £100 or £150 (or £150, £200 or £250 for pets 9 years of age or older)

If you want a cheaper Lifetime plan with dental cover, a vet hotline and euthanasia cover, you may want to consider M&S Bank Pet Insurance. Their Standard Lifetime plan starts around £10 per month (£120 a year) with a £100 excess for a healthy, young cat, which provides up to £4,000 of annually renewing Lifetime vet health cover—subject to a £1,000 per condition limit that tops up each year when you renew.

Pros
  • Lower premiums
  • Euthanasia cover
  • Vet hotline
  • Dental injury & illness on Lifetime plans
  • M&S voucher with new Standard/Premier policies
Cons
  • Per condition limit of £1k on Standard Lifetime plan

How Does Cheap Pet Insurance Work?

Finding a cheap pet insurance deal might be just what you need if you can't (or don't want to) pay much out of pocket in premium. But how can one plan be so much cheaper than another? There are a few ways in which pet insurers keep prices low:

  • Lower vet cover limits
  • "Per condition" limits on Lifetime plans
  • No cover for features like dental illness (e.g., decay or disease), EU travel, 3rd party liability, vet phone access, euthanasia cover, etc.
  • Higher excess
  • Limits on reimbursement for medicine, procedures, etc.

To get an indication of how much pet insurance costs on average, we've gathered quotes from dozens of policies for a young, mixed-breed dog (which you can read about in our article, Average Cost of Pet Insurance for Dogs) and a British Shorthair cat. Levels of vet cover vary from £500 up to £15,000, which accounts for the significant variation in annual premiums. Generally speaking, the cheapest premiums are for plans with the least vet cover.

How Much is Pet Insurance on Average?DogCat
LowHighLowHigh
Accident Only£45£171£36£127
Time Limited£61£296£48£322
Max Benefit£116£533£94£500
Lifetime£133£733£109£662

Older pets will cost more, as will some breeds that are renowned for congenital health problems (e.g., Bulldogs and German Shepherds).

How To Pick a Good Pet Insurance Deal for You

When you're on a budget, choosing pet insurance takes thought. In order to pay a lower premium, you'll probably need to give up on features, receive less vet cover and/or agree to pay a higher excess.

Think about which features you truly need and why you really want pet insurance—is it to reimburse for lower-ticket items like the ear infections that cost a few hundred pounds to treat over the years, or to give you the ability to pay for a life-threatening surgery that may cost thousands of pounds, which you otherwise might not be able to afford? Do you want a vetfone to call? Do you take your pet on long trips to the EU?

By narrowing down your true list of requirements, you'll be able to choose a plan the is best suited to the needs of you and your pet. Keep in mind that once your pet suffers from a medical condition it can become very difficult to get another insurer to offer cover for that condition (as it will be considered a "pre-existing condition").

It can also be useful to have an understanding of the average cost of cat insurance and the average cost of dog insurance, so you know if you're getting a good deal or paying too much.

According to our analysis of a broad selection of pet insurers at our partner Compare Cover and elsewhere, the providers mentioned on this page stand out as objectively offering some of the cheapest Lifetime plans in the market. The best pet insurance for you will depend on your individual situation and spending patterns.
