Coverwise Bronze offers competitive rates relative to the market for decent travel insurance policies for America. For example, their Bronze plan costs from £27.88 for a single 30-year-old traveller heading to the USA for two weeks. A family of four would pay from around £64. Coverwise is available through comparison sites, too. Their "Bronze" policy includes £20 million of medical cover, £1,500 of cancellation cover and £1,750 of baggage cover, all with a £100 excess. The Explorer Travel Insurance Gold Plus offers quite a bit more cancellation cover (£2,500) for a price less than £30 for our sample 30-year-old traveller holidaying in America for two weeks—the plan offers less medical cover but to be fair £5 million is in all likelihood more than enough. Cover For You plans have some of the best sets of features in the market, with plans including extras like Scheduled Airline Failure, Delayed Departure, Personal Liability, Mugging, Hijacking and Legal Expenses. Their Gold plan is one of the more economical top-rated travel insurance policies for America, and includes £15 million of medical cover, £5,000 of cancellation cover and £2,000 of baggage cover. Families would cost from around 2X as much to cover. Also, the excess is only £75, which is lower than some other options, especially cheaper plans. You can buy Extended Gadget Cover to protect up to £3k of devices.

Higher Tier

Higher-rated travel insurance policies usually have the most coverage and are therefore the most expensive. These plans can cost at least £80 for a family of 4; single travellers would pay from around £35 for cover.

Coverage levels for cancellation and baggage are relatively high on the Insurefor Premier plan for the price, but there's no cover for events like volcanic eruption or a pandemic. Prices start from around £43 for a 30-year-old single traveller to the USA. The cost for a family is around £109 for a trip to the USA.

Consider this if you want good value and comprehensive cover for trips to the USA.

AA's Gold Essential policy (available from comparison sites) is underwritten by AXA and offers up to £5k in cancellation cover and £2,500 for baggage. Their top-tier Gold Essential plan for comparison sites includes cover for Travel Disruption such as insolvency of accommodation providers or their booking agents, and also for catastrophe (e.g., fire, earthquake, volcanic eruption or ash, tsunami, storm, etc.). FYI we checked the Policy Wording and the Gold Essential policy includes cover for if the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) advises against all travel or all but essential travel to the area you are travelling to within 21 days of your departure date (but not including where advice is issued due to a pandemic).
