Travel Insurance to Turkey: Why it's Important

Travel insurance is a must have for those holidaying in Turkey. The right travel insurance plan can lesson the financial burden of a holiday gone wrong, whether due to an accident, a health emergency, lost bags or a myriad of other reasons. Having protection through travel insurance can be even more meaningful when you're so far from home.

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is not valid in Turkey. Travel insurance provides cover for Emergency Medical situations, plus the other two major areas of cover, Cancellation and Baggage. This cover is meant to help protect against the financial ramifications of unexpected events outside of your control, such as cutting short your trip due to a medical emergency or lost luggage. Emergency medical can be a vital feature to have in Turkey—if you're injured in an accident or fall ill whilst in Turkey you may face high medical bills from a private hospital, ambulance, etc.

If you'd like more detailed information on the ins and outs of travel insurance plans, you can read more in our Travel Insurance Guide. Or see the latest Foreign Travel Advice to Turkey for answers to questions on health, travel documents, etc.

How To Pick a Good Travel Insurance Plan for You

To help you decide which travel insurance plan is best for your trip to Turkey, we've analysed over 100 plans from dozens of insurance providers for Single Trip travel insurance to Turkey. Choosing the best travel insurance for your needs will depend on factors like price points and features that you might find valuable. Here are some key features to look for when choosing a travel insurance plan to Turkey:

  • Cancellation/Curtailment cover to reflect the price you paid for any non-refundable travel and accommodation expenses.
  • Medical expenses of £5 million to £10 million or more.
  • Repatriation to the UK in the event you've suffered a serious illness or accident while abroad and need to be brought back to the UK under special circumstances.
  • Baggage/Personal Belongings in case your bags or belongings are lost, stolen or damaged.
  • Baggage Delay to reimburse you for the purchase of necessary personal items should your bags be delayed.
  • Travel Delay/Missed Departure can protect you in case unexpected events beyond your control (e.g., adverse weather) wreck havoc with your travel itinerary.

When considering plans you may also want to check features like personal liability, loss or theft of your passport, Catastrophe/Natural Disaster cover and Gadget cover (if you want more cover for your mobile phone, tablet, laptop, etc.).

Single Trip or Multi Trip Cover

You'll also need to decide whether to buy a an Annual, Multitrip Plan or a Single Trip Plan. If you travel at least 2 times per year then it's usually cheaper to buy Annual Plan rather than individual Single Trip Plans each time you travel, but this can vary from destination to destination and depending on your individual details.

If you're considering an Annual, Multi-Trip policy, be sure to check the Maximum Trip Length before committing. The Maximum Trip Length on Annual plans is typically in the 30 to 45 day range, but can be shorter or longer depending on the provider and plan. Those going on extended trips may find they'll be away longer than is covered by an Annual policy and might only get valid cover through a Single Trip policy.

Travel Insurance to Turkey for Families

Lost luggage, travel delay, and medical accidents can feel even more stressful when you have children in tow. There are two features in particular for families to look out for that are not included on all plans, which can make life a bit better in the case of some travel mishaps: Baggage Delay and Travel Delay.

Baggage Delay cover can cover you for essentials (e.g., nappies, clothing, etc.) you need to buy if your bags are lost or delayed.

Travel Delay cover can provide reimbursement for food if you're flight is delayed for over 12 hours. More than other travelling groups, we think travel insurance is critical for a family on the go, to help them ease the burden of a holiday mishap.

Generally speaking, when it comes to travel insurance, children often travel free. That is, travel insurance for a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids) costs roughly 2X the cost of an individual, adult traveller. If only the airlines would price accordingly! The travel insurance plans mentioned above still stand out for families due to their features, and—so important for families—most offer some level of travel delay and baggage delay cover.

Average Cost of Travel Insurance to Turkey

The cost to insure your holiday in Turkey ranges widely; a healthy, young adult can expect to pay an average of £12 for a 1-week stay, but the cheapest cover costs as little as £5 or so. A family of four will pay around twice as much.

chart of average cost of travel insurance from UK to Turkey for individual and family

Prices are largely a function of the overall Medical, Baggage and Cancellation limits, as you can see below. And the cheaper plans tend to have a higher excess (the amount you contribute towards a claim.) You get what you pay for.
