To help you decide which moped insurance is best for you, we've analysed dozens of moped insurance plans from leading UK insurance providers from our partner QuoteZone. Choosing the best moped insurance for your needs will depend on factors like price points and features that you might find valuable, such as Breakdown and Personal Liability cover.

Best Cheap UK Moped Insurance

Moped insurance is meant to protect you against significant financial losses in the event of an accident or other mishap involving your moped and can cost hundreds of pounds per year, depending on factors like your age and the type of moped you ride. For those on a budget, the following companies stood out for offering relatively good value, with solid cover and features with cheap prices relative to the average cost of moped insurance.

Lexham

Consider this if you want to pay a low price for moped insurance.

Lexham might be a solid option if you don't want to pay a lot for moped insurance. For instance, a young, 16-year-old rider would pay just under £1,000 for comprehensive cover for a 2018 Yamaha Aero R moped, which is less than half the average cost of cover for a new rider with provisional licence. A 30-year-old with a full motorcycle licence would pay around £600, which is around 25% less than average.

Keep in mind that while Lexham prices came in hundreds of pounds lower than other companies, there are no bells and whistles with Lexham moped cover and you'll need to pay extra for optional add-ons such as Helmet and Leathers (£42.00), Personal Accident (£54.00) and Breakdown cover (£60.00).

While Lexham offers a monthly payment plan for those who can't afford the upfront annual payment, you'd pay a very high APR of 69% for the right to pay monthly (similar to other motorcyle insurance finance options). On a policy with a £994 annual premium, opting to pay monthly would result in you paying a total of £1,223, or an extra £228 out of pocket. If you have the money now, pay upfront to save on the high finance charges.

MCE

Consider this if you want to pay a low price for motorcycle insurance.

MCE Insurance is an independently-owned motorcycle insurance provider based in Northamptonshire. In our research MCE has produced some of the cheaper moped insurance quotes in the UK market—in some cases up to 80% less than other policies. In large part this discount reflects a higher compulsory excess, which is around 2X as high as the average moped excess (MCE's moped excess typically falls in the £750 to £950 range, as opposed to around £400 on other moped plans).

While you'll pay a lower rate to get insurance with MCE, in return you get less financial protection in the event of a claim since you'll be responsible for paying the excess (the amount you contribute towards a claim). It's a trade off that will suit some people but not others.

MCE moped insurance includes 183 days EU Cover, Trackday Cover and ALL modifications covered (excluding Nitro & turbo/super/hyper charger). Policies include a number of other features as standard, such as Helmet and Leathers, Legal Assistance and Personal Accident—plus Breakdown Recovery is included on all MCE policies, which we like. For an additional cost, Excess Protection, Protected NCB for 1 or more years, Home Start and EU Breakdown are offered as optional extras for an added premium.

Just Motorcycle Insurance

Consider this if you want solid cover from a specialist motorbike insurer and free legal cover.

Just Motorcycle Insurance is a trading style of Carole Nash, which has a solid reputation as a motorcycle insurance specialist broker. Optional extras include: Helmet and Leathers (~£44.99), Legal Assistance (~£33.00) and Personal Accident (~£39.98). Just Motorcycle has a UK-based call centre and 24-hour claim lines. If necessary, payment options are available to help you spread out the cost of cover for your moped.

Devitt

Consider this if you want to pay a low price for motorcycle insurance.

Devitt is a specialist motorbike with a long history, that's been providing motorbike insurance quotes since 1936. Additional discounts are available for advanced motorcycle training, secure parking, limited mileage and security systems. If your moped is stolen or damaged, you may be covered to ride other mopeds included, depending on the underwriter.

Additional options for your moped insurance including legal expenses, personal accident (PA) cover or PA with helmet and leathers cover, as well as a choice of RAC breakdown options. Other perks include renewal reminder and claims helpline text directly to your phone. If you apply, use the 10% discount code for SPORTSBIKESHOP.

What to look for in Moped Insurance

To choose the best moped insurance policy for you, first decide upon which type of cover best suits your needs and which optional features are most important to you. The three main types of motorcycle insurance are Third Party Only (TPO), Third Party, Theft and Fire (TPTF) and Comprehensive—in increasing order of coverages.

Third Party Only (TPO): The minimum insurance cover required by law, Third Party plans cover damage to other vehicles or people if your moped is involved in an accident—but there's no cover for damage to your moped though.

Third Party, Fire and Theft (TPFT): TPFT plans include Third Party cover and in addition will pay the market value of your moped if it's stolen and not recovered, or pay the cost to repair or replace your bike if it's damaged by fire.

Comprehensive: The highest level of cover, Comprehensive plans include TPFT features PLUS protection against damage to your own moped in the event of an accident—for example, payment for a replacement moped if yours is written off after a collision.

If a Comprehensive plan fits in your budget, it will generally provide the best coverage compared to TPO and TPFT plans. Despite providing the highest coverage, however, Comprehensive plans can cost the same or less than TPO or TPFT plans, so it's always worth checking prices before choose which motorcycle insurance plan is best for you.

The next step to take is picking out which features are important to you. Typical features, which may be included as standard or offered for an additional premium, are:

  • Helmet and Leathers
  • Roadside Assistance/Breakdown
  • Personal Accident
  • Legal Assistance
  • EU Cover
  • Key Cover

As these features can each add £15 to £60 to the cost of moped insurance, it is certainly worth considering if you'll use them or not. For instance, if you haven't paid a lot for your helmet (but there are very good reasons why you should pay more for a helmet), then paying £25 to £50 for Helmets & Leathers cover each year may be a waste of money for you.

Roadside Assistance, Personal Accident and Legal Assistance can perhaps create significant value added if you run into trouble and may be worth any added cost, unless of course you buy a policy on which they're already included as standard without an added premium.

Average Cost of Moped Insurance

The average cost of UK moped comprehensive insurance for a 30-year-old rider with a full motorcycle licence is £314. This reflects plans with a £405 excess on average, for a new Yamaha Aerox R. The price you pay for insurance will vary based on a number of factors, such as your age, licence, excess, type of insurance, where you live, your driving record, occupation, etc., as we discuss in detail in our article on Why is Motorcycle Insurance so High. But age is surely one of the largest factors in determining your moped insurance premium.

Insurance companies price policies based on perceived risk and younger riders with less experience are statistically more likely to have a collision. In fact, it costs £1,300 less on average to insure a 21-year-old moped rider with a full motorcycle licence than a 16-year-old rider with a provisional licence.

How to Lower the Cost of Moped Insurance.

Those looking for a good deal on moped insurance are well served by checking prices at a comparison site like our partner QuoteZone, as they provide access to many quotes at one time and only require you to fill out one form online. This is useful for getting an idea of how much you'll pay for your particular profile. You'll find the cheapest prices tend to have a higher excess (meaning you'll contribute more towards a claim) and may not offer extras like

If you're looking to pay a lower price for your insurance and are willing to contribute more towards any valid claims, then you might save hundreds of pounds by choosing a plan with a higher excess. For example, recent quotes for comprehensive cover for a 21 year old riding a new Yamaha Aero R moped from MCE and Just Motorcycles differed by £500, largely due to a difference in excess—the MCE plan was priced at £1,100 with a £950 excess, noticeably less than Just Motorcycle's price of £1,600 with a £450 excess.

Choosing a plan with a higher excess and lower price may suit you and save you money in the short term, but only if you're financially able to pay the larger excess out of pocket in the event of a claim.

Another way to potentially lower your cost of moped insurance is to opt for a lesser type of cover (e.g., TPFT versus Comprehensive), but before doing so be sure that you're comfortable taking on the added risk—for instance, if you opt for TPFT instead of Comprehensive you'll be financially responsible for damage to your own bike in the event of a collision. Often, the discount for dropping cover levels is quite insignificant, in which case it's certainly not worth reducing your cover from a risk-reward perspective.

Type of Moped InsuranceAverage Premium
Third Party Only£147
Third Party, Fire and Theft£172
Comprehensive£314

Moving from a provisional to a full motorcycle licence can save you money, regardless of age. A 30-year-old with a provisional licence would pay around £50 more for comprehensive cover for a 50cc moped than a 30-year-old with a full motorcycle licence. For more information on motorcycle licences please refer to Gov.uk's Moped and Motorcycle information page. We've included a table below with maximum engine size and minimum age limits for each level of motorcycle licence for your convenience.

Moped Driving Licences by Age

Progressive
AM licence (allowing you to ride a 50cc bike)16 or over
A1 licence (allowing you to ride a 125cc bike)17 or over
A2 licence (limiting you to a maximum bhp of 47)19 and over
A licence (allowing you to ride any bike of any sized engine)21 and over and have held your A2 licence for two years or more

A2 licence (limiting you to a bike up to 35kw)9 and over

Notice that if you are getting an A2 or A motorcycle licence for the first time, you'll be subject to certain engine size and age limits that are not imposed on someone who has progressed through the motorcycle licence ranks one step at a time, gaining experience along the way.
