Cheap Third Party Liability Motorcycle Insurance Companies

In order to determine which motorcycle insurance companies provide cheap third party liability insurance, we gathered dozens of quotes across three popular motorcycles for riders living in three different cities in England. The results include a few important takeaways.

1. Limited Choice

For our sample rider, only Lexham, BeMoto, Bennetts and One Call returned quotes for third party only insurance.

Carole Nash, Motorcycles Direct, Hastings, Devitt, Performance Direct, MCN, BikeSure and more than a dozen other providers would not quote for our rider.

2. Comprehensive can be cheaper than third party only, especially for bigger, more expensive motorbikes

Our study demonstrated that for smaller moped-style bikes, third party liability cover was often cheaper than comprehensive—but not by much. Averaging the cheapest three quotes for each scenario, our Honda PCX 125 was quoted £781 for comprehensive cover and £738 for third party only liability insurance. In our opinion, the comprehensive cover would offer much better value for money in that scenario, because it covers damage to or theft of the Honda PCX 125, whereas the third party only policy would only cover damage to another party.

And for the two larger, more expensive motorbikes (Yamaha MT-10, valued at £11,500 and BMW R1250 GS Adventure TE, valued at £20,000), the average comprehensive policy was actually cheaper than the third party only policy. And the more expensive the bike, the more disconnected the pricing. For example, the third party only policies averaged nearly 2X the price of comprehensive cover for the BMW.

Cheap 3rd Party Only Insurance Companies by Geography

Depending on where you live, you may pay more or less than riders in other areas. To show how prices can change by your location, we gathered 3rd Party Liability insurance quotes for bike riders living in Birmingham, Manchester and London. By far, bike riders in London paid the most of the three major UK cities—specifically, the average Hackney London 3rd party bike insurance quote was over £2K, more than double the cost in Stockport, Manchester. According to our data, Lexham offered the cheapest third party motorcycle insurance for Birmingham riders, with quotes of £436 for the Honda PCX and £802 for the Yamaha MT-10. Lexham didn't quote our request for third party only cover for the BMW motorbike.

In the most expensive city for third party only motorcycle insurance, London, quotes for our sample rider averaged £2,800, more than comprehensive cover. The cheapest company was Lexham, who quoted around 30% cheaper than the next provider (in this case, One Call).

Which Companies Provide Cheap Third Party Bike Insurance in Manchester?

Prices were quite a bit cheaper in Stockport Manchester than in Birmingham or London. Lexham quoted just £270 for third party cover for the Honda PCX; and £662 for the Yamaha. Lexham was more than 50% cheaper than the other companies who quoted us in Manchester for our sample rider.

Cheap 3rd Party Liability Motorcycle Insurance Companies for Different Bikes

The type of motorbike you ride will impact the price you pay for Third Party liability insurance. Generally speaking, the larger the engine and the faster the bike, the more you'll pay for Liability cover. This is because speed is a major factor in many road accidents. For example, liability insurance for a Yamaha MT-10 costs nearly 3X the cost of cover for a Honda PCX 125. And the BMW R125 GS 3rd party insurance cost was 2X the cost of the Yamaha. In addition, owners of faster bikes not only pay more for liability insurance, but they'll typically have fewer insurance companies from which to choose.

Methodology

In order to determine what a rider will typically pay for Third Party Only liability motorcycle insurance and to pick out the cheapest third party bike insurance companies, we gathered quotes for a Honda PCX 125, Yamaha MT-10, and BMW R1250 GS Adventure TE. Our sample driver was 50-year-old driver with a Full UK Motorcycle Licence and 5 years of No Claims Discount driving under 4,000 miles per year.
