India is a mid-priced destination for travel insurance from the UK — more expensive than Europe, but considerably cheaper than the USA. Prices have roughly doubled since the early 2020s, so if you haven't bought India cover recently, expect to pay more than you might remember. This guide sets out what you can expect to pay, what cover levels to look for, and what to keep in mind when comparing policies for India specifically.

We gathered pricing data for travel insurance to India from hundreds of policies across dozens of UK providers. The figures below reflect the average of the 10 cheapest quotes available — the true floor of the market at the time of collection. Your own quote may be higher or lower depending on your age, health, trip length and chosen add-ons.

How Much is Travel Insurance to India?

For a healthy traveller aged around 30, cheap single-trip travel insurance to India for a two-week stay starts from around £49 — the average of the 10 cheapest quotes available through our comparison partner at the time of our research. This is roughly mid-market globally: more expensive than Europe, less expensive than the USA or Caribbean.

The cost of single-trip cover scales with trip length — a one-week trip will cost less than a two-week trip, and a three-week trip more again. For longer stays of a month or more, it's worth comparing the price of single-trip cover against an annual multi-trip policy (see below).

Single TripAnnual, Multi-Trip
Trip Length:1 week2 weeks3 weeksdepends on policy
Approx. cheapest premium~£25–30~£49~£60–65~£25–35*

*Annual worldwide cover excluding USA/Canada/Caribbean. Verify the maximum trip length per journey (often 31–45 days) before buying.

Note: prices above reflect the average of the cheapest available quotes for a healthy 30-year-old. Premiums rise with age, particularly from age 65 onwards, and increase further for those with pre-existing medical conditions.

Consider an Annual Policy

If you plan to take any other trips abroad during the year, it is nearly always worth comparing the price of an annual multi-trip policy against a single-trip policy for India alone. An annual policy that covers India falls under worldwide cover — but if you're not also visiting the USA, Canada or the Caribbean this year, opt for worldwide excluding those regions, which is considerably cheaper.

The key thing to check with any annual policy is the maximum trip length per journey — many cap individual trips at 31, 35 or 45 days. If your India trip is three weeks or more, confirm the policy covers the full duration before buying.

For families, an annual multi-trip policy often makes even more sense. A family of four can typically find annual worldwide cover (excluding USA/Canada) for around the same price as, or not much more than, a single-trip policy for India alone — with the added benefit of covering every other trip the family takes in the year.

What Cover Do You Get with Cheap Travel Insurance to India?

There is a real difference in cover levels between budget and mid-market policies for India. The main trade-offs when you pay less are lower Cancellation limits, lower Baggage limits, and a higher excess — not the Emergency Medical limit, which tends to be similarly high across the market.

As a rough guide based on our research into cheaper and average policies for India:

PremiumEmergency MedicalCancellationBaggageExcess
Single Trip (2 weeks, age 30)
Average of 10 cheapest~£49~£10–13m~£1,000–1,500~£750–1,250~£150–200
Market average overall~£90–100~£13m~£2,500–3,000~£1,500–2,000~£100–125
Annual Multi-Trip
Average of 10 cheapest~£25–35~£10–14m~£1,000–1,500~£750–1,000~£125–175
Market average overall~£60–70~£13m~£2,000–2,500~£1,250–1,750~£100–120

Note: figures above are approximate based on NimbleFins pricing research. Your actual quotes will vary by age, health, insurer and exact travel dates.

The key takeaways from this data:

  • Emergency Medical cover is broadly similar across price tiers — even the cheapest policies typically offer £10 million or more of medical cover, which is sufficient for most circumstances in India. Healthcare in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore has improved significantly, but private hospital treatment can still be expensive, and repatriation back to the UK is the biggest single medical cost on any India policy.
  • Cancellation cover is where cheaper policies cut corners most noticeably — budget policies typically offer £1,000 to £1,500 of cancellation cover, versus £2,500 to £3,000 on a mid-market policy. If your total non-refundable trip costs (flights, accommodation, tours) are higher than your policy's cancellation limit, you're underinsured on cancellation.
  • Baggage limits are lower on budget policies — typically £750 to £1,250, with per-item sub-limits of £150 to £300. This may not be sufficient to replace a laptop, camera or smartphone if stolen. Gadget cover as an add-on is worth considering if you're travelling with expensive electronics.
  • Excess is higher on cheaper policies — meaning you pay more out of pocket towards any claim. An excess of £150 to £200 on a budget policy compared to £100 to £125 on an average policy.

What to Look For in Travel Insurance to India

India has several specific considerations that are worth factoring in when comparing policies.

Healthcare

India's healthcare system varies considerably by location. Private hospitals in major cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai — are generally good and can handle most medical situations. However, in rural areas and smaller towns, facilities may be limited, and you may need to be transferred to the nearest major city or, in serious cases, repatriated to the UK. For this reason, Repatriation cover is important — make sure your policy explicitly covers medical repatriation back to the UK, including medically supervised transfer, and check there's a 24-hour emergency assistance line you can call from India (with a significant time difference from the UK, 24/7 access matters).

Emergency Medical cover of £5 million is a reasonable minimum for India; higher limits cost only a little more in premium and provide a larger safety net.

Monsoon Season

India's monsoon season runs roughly from June to September across most of the country, with regional variation (the south-west monsoon arrives earlier in Kerala and later in the north). Heavy flooding, flight disruptions and road closures are all real risks during this period. Look for a policy that includes:

  • Travel Disruption / Natural Disaster cover for flight delays, cancellations and curtailment caused by severe weather or flooding — not always included as standard on budget policies.
  • Cancellation cover sufficient to cover your full pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs if you need to cancel due to severe weather affecting your destination.

Check the FCDO's India travel advice page before you travel — certain border regions carry heightened risk advisories, and travelling against FCDO advice will typically invalidate your travel insurance policy.

Adventure Activities

India attracts a large number of travellers undertaking trekking, hiking, white-water rafting, wildlife safaris and similar activities. Many standard travel insurance policies do not cover higher-risk activities as standard — check your policy's activity list carefully if you plan to trek in the Himalayas, go rafting in Rishikesh, or take part in any other non-standard activities. Adventure sports cover can usually be added as an optional extra.

Theft and Baggage

Petty theft, pickpocketing and bag snatching can be a risk in busy tourist areas, particularly markets, railway stations and popular sites in Delhi, Mumbai and Agra. Make sure your Baggage / Personal Belongings cover has:

  • A sufficient overall limit for what you're carrying
  • A per-item limit high enough to cover your most valuable single item (many budget policies cap this at £150–£300)
  • Cover for unattended baggage, if relevant — check the specific conditions around leaving bags in taxis, hotels or on public transport

If you're travelling with a mobile phone, laptop or camera, consider adding optional Gadget cover, as standard Baggage cover often either excludes gadgets entirely or has a per-item limit too low to replace them.

How to Compare

When comparing policies, use Defaqto star ratings alongside price. For India, a 3-star policy typically provides the floor of what you'd want — adequate medical cover and basic Cancellation and Baggage limits. Moving to 4 or 5 stars buys higher Cancellation cover, lower excess and additional features like Travel Disruption cover.

You should also consider whether an annual policy works out cheaper than single-trip, especially for longer trips or if you have any other overseas travel planned this year.

Travel Insurance to India with a Pre-Existing Medical Condition

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, always declare it fully and accurately when getting a quote. Any undisclosed condition that gives rise to a claim will typically result in that claim being rejected — and given that India's healthcare facilities can be patchy outside major cities, having full cover in place matters.

Specialist providers known for covering travellers with medical conditions include goodtogoinsurance.com, JustTravelcover.com, OK To Travel, Saga, AllClear and Virgin Money. Fit2Travel and Free Spirit are options for those who may not be accepted by mainstream providers.

FAQs

Travel insurance is not a legal requirement for visiting India, but it is strongly recommended. India has no reciprocal healthcare agreement with the UK, and your GHIC card is not valid there. Private medical treatment in India's major cities can be expensive, and repatriation back to the UK in a serious case can cost tens of thousands of pounds. Without insurance, all of these costs would fall to you personally.
No. Your GHIC (or EHIC) is only valid in European Economic Area countries, and a small number of other territories with bilateral agreements. India is not among them. You have no reciprocal healthcare entitlements in India as a UK visitor — all costs would be at the standard rate for private patients.
Yes. UK nationals require a visa to visit India. Most visitors apply for an e-Visa online before travel, which covers tourism, business and medical visits for stays of up to 90 days. Make sure your passport has at least six months' validity from your date of entry and two blank pages available. Check the FCDO India entry requirements page for the latest guidance before applying.
If you plan to take any other trip abroad in the same 12 months, an annual worldwide policy (excluding USA/Canada if you're not visiting those regions) often costs the same as or less than a single-trip policy for India alone. Always compare both before buying. Key things to check on an annual policy: that the maximum trip length per journey (usually 31–45 days) is sufficient for your India trip, and that the policy explicitly covers India under its "worldwide" definition.
Standard travel insurance policies do not automatically cover trekking, mountaineering or adventure activities in the Himalayas. If you plan to trek — in Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand or elsewhere — check your policy's list of covered activities carefully. You'll likely need to add an adventure sports or trekking extension. Some policies specify altitude limits, so check these if you're planning high-altitude routes. Emergency medical evacuation (e.g., helicopter rescue) in remote mountain areas is expensive and must be explicitly covered.
It depends on the policy. Standard travel insurance covers Trip Cancellation due to illness or specified events, but not all policies include cover for disruption caused by extreme weather or natural disaster. If you're travelling during or around monsoon season (broadly June to September), look specifically for Travel Disruption or Natural Disaster cover — this can cover flight cancellations, delays and accommodation costs if severe weather affects your trip. Read the policy wording carefully, as the trigger conditions for these benefits vary between insurers.
