Insure & Go Travel Insurance Review: What You Need to Know
Insure & Go is a popular, specialist UK travel insurance provider, which offers a range of plans to suit those looking to cover a budget holiday up to those insuring a premium holiday valued at up to £10,000 per person. There are broadly two ways to buy an Insure & Go plan—direct from their website or from a comparison site like Compare Cover. Generally speaking, the plans offered from comparison sites are cheaper and (mostly) provide lower cover limits—that said, the best plan available from comparison sites, Premium, sports many limits that are higher than the Budget plan available direct, despite a lower price (e.g., Premium offers £2,000 of Cancellation cover per insured person, but the Budget plan only provides £1,000 of the same). The plan with the highest cover (£10k Cancellation) is the Black plan, only available direct.
For the most part, those wanting at least £5k of Cancellation cover or £2,000 of Baggage cover per person will find more suitable plans direct from Insure & Go. Those who don't need that much cover can probably find a better deal from a comparison site.
Are Mobile Phones Covered? Mobile phones are covered through Valuables cover on all plans, from £100 up to £600 (with Single Item limits of £100 to £500). For many people, these limits may be too low. If this is the case for you, you're able to pay extra for the Valuables Extension, which provides up to £2,000 of cover per policy, with a £1,000 limit per item. When buying from the comparison site you also have the option to get half the cover, or £1,000 total Valuables with a £500 per-item limit. Not this limit is per policy not per insured person. We gathered prices for this Valuables Extension to give you an idea of what this might cost.
|Valuables Extension Premium||Up to £2,000 (£1,000 per item)||Up to £1,000 (£500 per item)|
|Single Trip (7 days)||All Plans||£13||n/a|
|Single Trip (7 days)||All Plans||£10.7||£5.9|
|Annual, Multi-Trip||All Plans||£17.2||£9.5|
Keep in mind that the average cost of optional Gadget travel cover is around £35 for Annual, Multi-trip policies and £13.50 for Single Trip policies. To see a list of other companies that offer a gadget travel insurance add on please see our article, Travel Insurance Companies with Optional Gadget Cover.
Does Insure & Go Travel Insurance Cover Trips in the UK? Holidays in your home area are covered under Insure & Go policies, so long as there is a minimum of 25 miles radius between your home and your pre-arranged and booked accommodation (except that Medical and Hospital Benefit are not covered).
Pre-Existing Conditions: As part of the online application you'll be asked a series of brief medical questions. If you have a medical condition, Insure & Go may be able to offer cover for some pre-existing medical conditions, for which you'll probably be required to pay a higher premium. Pre-existing conditions are only covered if they've been fully declared, accepted and paid for.
Buying Direct vs Using a Comparison Site
Generally speaking, the cheapest Insure & Go plans are available only through comparison sites; whereas plans with the highest cover levels are only available direct from the Insure & Go website. Beyond that, there are pros and cons to both sources in terms of features and price points. We'll try to explain the differences to help you understand whether buying direct or through an aggregator better suits your individual needs.
Buying Insure & Go Direct
Buying direct gives you access to a few features not available on plans bought through comparison sites. For example, for an added cost you can add cruise, golf and/or natural disaster cover to plans bought direct. In addition, Winter Sports is included on Annual, Multi-Trip plans purchased from the Insure & Go website (but you do pay a higher premium, which may not be economical for those who won't make use of the "included" Winter Sports cover).
Insure & Go direct offers four levels of Annual and Single Trip travel insurance—Budget, Silver, Gold and Black. Trip Cancellation, Emergency Medical, Legal Assistance, Personal Accident and Personal Belongings/Baggage are included on all policies—so, unusually, are extra features like Delayed Departure and Scheduled Airline Failure. Silver and tiers above also include Missed Departure cover. IF you want cover for natural disasters such as tsunamis, earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions (including volcanic ash clouds), hurricanes, etc. then you'll need to buy the optional Natural Disaster cover for an added cost.
For those heading to the slopes, Winter Sports is included in Annual, Multi-Trip policies and can be added to Single Trip policies for an additional cost. Those going on a cruise can add the optional Cruise cover to all except the Budget plan, and will provide specific cover such as Cabin Confinement, Missed Port Departure, etc. Other travel insurance add-ons like Golf and Natural Disasters are available on some plans.
Over 65s: There is no upper age limit on Insure & Go policies, although maximum trip lengths may be shorter for those aged 66 or older.
Buying Insure & Go via Comparison Site
If you're after a budget travel insurance plan, the cheapest holiday cover from Insure & Go can be found at a comparison site. In fact, all three comparison site plans (Economy, Economy Plus or Premium) come out cheaper than any direct plan. Depending on details like geographic cover and limits, you can save 10% to 60% or more buying any of the comparison site plans instead of buying the low-tier Budget plan direct from Insure & Go.
While you'll need to pay extra for Winter Sports cover, the cover levels are higher than those offered on the direct Budget plan. The same holds true for Cancellation, Personal Money and Medical cover—the limits are equal or greater on all comparison site plans versus the Budget plan. Additionally, those buying comparison site plans get cover for longer trip lengths, relatively speaking. Pretty good value for money—if you don't need cover for natural disasters, cruise or golf.
Over 65s: There is no cover for over 65's on Insure & Go policies bought from comparison sites.
Bottom Line: If you're looking for a budget plan, Compare Cover offers three solid plans, for £5 to £20 for most Single trips for a 35-year-old individual traveller, depending on geography and level of cover. Those looking to insure luxury holidays valued over £5k might find more suitable cover levels buying direct from Insure & Go.
How do Insure & Go Prices Compare
Overall, the cost of Insure & Go travel insurance plans is very attractive when compared with market averages. Only Insure & Go's top-tier Gold and Black plans (and perhaps Silver for Single trips) work out higher than the average cost of holiday cover (illustrated by the columns on the right in the charts below), whether you're travelling to geographies like Europe or America. We think Insure & Go offers attractive deals, especially with their Economy, Economy Plus and Premium plans from comparison sites.

How does Insure & Go Travel Insurance Compare to Competitors?
To better understand the value of Coverwise travel insurance you need to look at it in the context of other available options. We compared it to other plans in the market so you can see which may be more suitable for you.
Insure & Go Travel Insurance vs Admiral Travel Insurance
Admiral travel insurance is another solid travel insurance company. We particularly like the ability to add £1,000 of gadget cover to their plans. Plus, Admiral's top-tier Gold an dPlatinum plans include Catastrophe cover to provide a financial buffer in case your trip is affected by a natural disaster like a hurricane or earthquake.
Bottom Line: If you want protection against Catastrophes and for your gadgets (e.g., mobile phones) then Admiral may be a solid choice.
Insure & Go Travel Insurance vs Sainsbury's Travel Insurance
Sainsbury's travel insurance offers good travel cover at decent prices, especially when purchased through a comparison site. All plans include Baggage, Cancellation and Emergency Medical, but you also get Scheduled Airline Failure, Delayed Departure and Trip Abandonment. Extended Gadget cover can be added to all plans to cover mobile phones, iPads, etc. For those going on an extended holiday, you may benefit from trip lengths that are longer than average.
