Insure & Go Travel Insurance Review: What You Need to Know

Insure & Go is a popular, specialist UK travel insurance provider, which offers a range of plans to suit those looking to cover a budget holiday up to those insuring a premium holiday valued at up to £10,000 per person. Plus they offer specialist cover such as cruise cover, backpackers insurance, over 65s cover, etc. They were purchased by competitor AllClear in September 2021.

While there used to be two ways to buy Insure and Go travel insurance—direct from their website or from a comparison site like Compare Cover—it seems they are no longer featuring on comparison sites. It used to be that the plans offered from comparison sites were cheaper and (mostly) provided lower cover limits.

But anyway, we will now discuss the plans they sell direct!

The plan with the highest cover (£10k Cancellation) is the Black plan. At the other end of the spectrum is the Budget plan (£1,000 Cancellation). There are two plans in between, Silver and Gold. We'll discuss how these differ later on.

Are Mobile Phones Covered? Mobile phones are covered through Valuables cover on all plans, from £100 up to £600 depending on the tier of cover (with Single Item limits of £100 to £500). For many people, these limits may be too low. If this is the case for you, you're able to pay extra for the Valuables Extension, which provides up to £2,000 of cover per policy, with a £1,000 limit per item. Not this limit is per policy not per insured person. We gathered prices for this Valuables Extension to give you an idea of what this might cost, although prices may vary.

Keep in mind that the average cost of optional Gadget travel cover is around £35 for Annual, Multi-trip policies and £13.50 for Single Trip policies. To see a list of other companies that offer a gadget travel insurance add on please see our article, Travel Insurance Companies with Optional Gadget Cover.

Pre-Existing Conditions: As part of the online application you'll be asked a series of brief medical questions. If you have a medical condition, Insure & Go may be able to offer cover for some pre-existing medical conditions, for which you'll probably be required to pay a higher premium. Pre-existing conditions are only covered if they've been fully declared, accepted and paid for.

What's Missing? Unfortunately, Insure and Go doesn't offer and financial failure or insolvency cover, which protects you if a provider goes bust and your trip falls apart. Read more about these coverages here.

Covid Cover: All policies bought from their website include Covid travel insurance. There is no cover for any other Coronavirus-related claims, including lockdowns, quarantines or other government restrictions. But there is cover for cancellation or curtailment related to Covid, subject to conditions, and for medical treatment for Coronavirus while abroad. Read more here.

How do Insure & Go Prices Compare

Overall, the cost of Insure & Go travel insurance plans is very attractive when compared with market averages. Only Insure & Go's top-tier Gold and Black plans (and perhaps Silver for Single trips) work out higher than the average cost of holiday cover (illustrated by the columns on the right in the charts below), whether you're travelling to geographies like Europe or America. We think Insure & Go offers attractive deals, especially with their Economy, Economy Plus and Premium plans from comparison sites.

Insurance quotes can vary significantly from day to day and according to each individual's details, so please just use the following data for general educational purposes only about the travel insurance market; your quotes may reflect a large degree of variation.

How does Insure & Go Travel Insurance Compare to Competitors?

To better understand the value of Insure and Go travel insurance you need to look at it in the context of other available options. We compared it to other plans in the market so you can see which may be more suitable for you.

Insure & Go Travel Insurance vs Admiral Travel Insurance

Admiral travel insurance is another solid travel insurance company. We particularly like the ability to add £1,000 of gadget cover to their plans. Plus, Admiral's top-tier Gold and Platinum plans include Catastrophe cover to provide a financial buffer in case your trip is affected by a natural disaster like a hurricane or earthquake.

Bottom Line: If you want protection against Catastrophes and for your gadgets (e.g., mobile phones) then Admiral may be a solid choice.

Insure & Go Travel Insurance vs Sainsbury's Travel Insurance

Sainsbury's travel insurance offers good travel cover at decent prices, especially when purchased through a comparison site. All plans include Baggage, Cancellation and Emergency Medical, but you also get Scheduled Airline Failure, Delayed Departure and Trip Abandonment. Extended Gadget cover can be added to all plans to cover mobile phones, iPads, etc. For those going on an extended holiday, you may benefit from trip lengths that are longer than average.

Bottom Line: Those needing cover for longer trips or want cover for gadgets and SAFI might find particularly suitable travel insurance from Sainsbury's Bank.

Insure & Go Insurance vs Coverwise Travel Insurance

Coverwise travel insurance is another reputable specialist travel insurance provider known for offering good value. Cancellation cover ranges from £1,000 to £10,000 and Baggage from £750 up to £3,000, with prices starting from around £5 for a single trip to Europe. Emergency Medical starts at £5 million and goes up to unlimited cover on top tier plans. The Valuables extension upgrade may be useful if you want more cover for gadgets like mobile phones, laptops, etc. to provide £1k or £2k of valuables cover, starting at a cost of £5.90.

Bottom Line: Coverwise is another reliable option for travel insurance with the added benefit of optional gadget cover to protect mobile phones, tablets, etc.
