In our view, CoverForYou is top notch for travel insurance. Not only do they include a lot of desirable features as standard or optional add-ons, but they have a really useful app, you can opt to autorenew (so you're not left without cover)—at a 10% discount, no less—and they have started a membership club anyone can join that gives a larger loyalty discount at renewal of up to 20%.

Speaking of discounts, they've offered our readers an exclusive 10% off with this voucher code: CFY10. Be sure to use this after clicking on the blue "Apply Now" button above to get quotes!

In this review, we'll dig into how features and prices compare.

Read about buying direct vs. buying through a comparison site like our partner QuoteZone. FYI the QuoteZone panel includes a number of travel insurance providers that will cover coronavirus, including CoverForYou!

CoverForYou Travel Insurance Review: What You Need to Know

CoverForYou offers a range of holiday cover plans to suit a variety of budgets and coverage needs, from those looking to cover a single holiday in Europe with budget cover for less than £5, up to those needing insurance for more valuable holidays worth up to £7,500 (or possibly more, if you need it).

Top tip: Travel Disruption cover is an extra add on. Keep this in mind if you want extra cover in the post-pandemic world of frequent cancellations and delays! It could be the best £2 - £10 you spend on a holiday.

There are basically two ways to buy CoverForYou holiday cover—direct from their website or from a comparison site like QuoteZone. What's the main difference? It depends on the comparison site. Our partner QuoteZone offers the same plans as you can buy direct (Silver, Gold and Platinum). But other comparison sites might have different plans—this typically means they might cost a touch less but they have lower cover limits, fewer features and higher excess levels. For example, MoneysuperMarket sells Economy, Standard and Premier plans and Confused.com sells Emerald, Ruby and Diamond plans. These offer less cancellation cover and charge a higher excess than the comparable Silver, Gold and Platinum plans you can get from QuoteZone.

The CoverForYou plan with the highest cover (£7.5k Cancellation and £3,000 of Baggage) is the Platinum plan, which is available direct from them or from QuoteZone. Those who don't need that much cover may very well find a cheaper deal from a comparison site, but remember the coverage and excess will be different. But see below to understand some of the other differences between plans bought direct or from a comparison site, especially if you're worried about coronavirus.

What does CoverForYou cover for coronavirus?

  • DO cover medical claims due to Coronavirus
  • DO cover cancellation due to you falling ill with Coronavirus and being unable to travel or being required to self isolate
  • DO cover curtailment due to the death of a close relative due to Coronavirus
  • DO NOT cover any cancellation due to government restriction on travel or the need to quarantine either at your destination or on return home due to Coronavirus

There may be conditions such as medical certification and/or an official test result. CoverForYou provides a great set of examples and how they would cover the situation here.

Are Mobile Phones Covered? Mobile phones are covered (up to £500 or £750) on all plans bought direct. We imagine these levels may be too low for most people, given we tend to travel with more than one gadget and they can cost hundreds or thousands of pound each. If you want £1,000 to £3,000 of total gadget cover you can buy the Extended Gadget Cover option, which can be added to policies bought direct and policies bought from a comparison site. Expect to pay anywhere from £11.75 to £69 for the Extended Gadget Cover option, more details of which can be found in the Gadget section.

To see a list of other companies that offer a gadget travel insurance add on please see our article, Travel Insurance Companies with Optional Gadget Cover.

Does CoverForYou Travel Insurance Cover Trips in the UK? Holidays in the UK are covered under CoverForYou Annual, Multi-trip policies, so long as you have pre-booked at least two nights’ accommodation in a hotel, motel, holiday camp, bed and breakfast, holiday cottage or similar accommodation rented for a fee.

Pre-Existing Conditions: As part of the online application you'll be asked a series of brief medical questions. If you have a medical condition, CoverForYou may be able to offer cover for some pre-existing medical conditions, for which you may need to pay a higher premium. Pre-existing conditions are only covered if they've been fully declared, accepted and paid for.

How do CoverForYou Prices Compare?

Generally speaking, holiday cover from CoverForYou is lower than the average cost of travel insurance, so anyone price conscious should definitely take a look at them. Despite that, they have some really great coverage options despite the affordable prices, whether your travel plans will take to you Europe, America or elsewhere.

CoverForYou Gadget Cover

As you can see in the Policy Limits, plans bought directly from CoverForYou include a low level (£250 or £500) of Gadget cover to protect mobile phones, iPads, etc. If, like many people, you travel with gadgets worth more than these low limits, you want to consider buying Extended Gadget Cover, which provides cover of £1k, £2k or £3k of total gadget cover (max £1,000, £1,500 or £1,500 per item), depending on which option you choose. Extended Gadget Cover can be added to both policies bought direct from CoverForYou or from a comparison site like QuoteZone.

Gadgets include mobile phones, iPhones, iPads, tablets, cameras, Go Pro’s, smartwatches and laptops.

Gagdet cover can cost between roughly £26 and £55 for Annual, Multi-trip policies or £11 to £24 for Single trip policies, depending on the plan and level of cover. (FYI the average cost of optional Gadget travel cover market-wide is £35 for Annual, Milti-trip policies and £13.50 for Single Trip policies.)

Buying Direct vs Using a Comparison Site

Generally speaking, the cheapest CoverForYou holiday cover plans are available through comparison sites, whereas the plan with the best cover is available direct from the CoverForYou website or from our comparison partner. Beyond that, there are pros and cons to both sources in terms of features and price points. We'll try to explain some of the differences to help you decide whether buying direct or through an aggregator comparison site better suits your particular needs.

Below is a table detailing the differences in Standard excess and upper age limits. You'll notice the excess and upper age limits are generally more favourable on plans bought direct rather than from a comparison site—depending on your age and situation, these details may or may not be important to you.

Differences between Direct and Comparison Site Policies

The Silver, Gold and Platinum policies you can buy direct or from QuoteZone have higher age limits, so are better suited for those in their mid-60s or older, as you can see in the table below.

Maximum age (years)Annual policiesSingle trip policies
Direct from CoverForYou7176
QuoteZone7176
MoneySuperMarket6666
Confused.com6666

There's also a difference when it comes to the excess, with Silver, Gold and Platinum policies again having an advantage:

Standard excess
Direct from CoverForYou£0
QuoteZone£0
MoneySuperMarket£50 or £95
Confused.com£50 or £95

Also, the Silver, Gold and Platinum policies include £750 of Gadget cover as standard (plus you can buy more cover if you need it), whereas the other policies only include gadget cover if you buy the add on.

Bottom Line: If you're looking for a budget plan, CoverForYou offers single trip cover from £4.75 and annual, multi-trip plans from £32, depending on geography, age, level of cover etc. (providing Cancellation cover from £1,500 to £7,500). Prices might be a touch higher when you buy direct but you do get some added perks as discussed above.

Types of CoverForYou Travel Insurance Policies

Direct from their website, CoverForYou offers three tiers of travel insurance—Silver, Gold and Platinum. These plans are also available from our partner QuoteZone (compare quotes here). From other comparison sites they offer different plans, which provide lower levels of cover in some cases. All are available for Single Trips or as Annual, Multi-Trip policies.

Customer Reviews

Is Coverforyou any good? Coverforyou is rated very highly by customer, earning a very impressive 4.8 out of 5 stars at Trustpilot from over 18,000 customers, with 83% giving them an 'Excellent' 5 star review. We scoured hundreds of reviews to learn what real customers have to say. Here are some positive reviews of Coverforyou:

"Very helpful. An excellent experience all round. My phone call was answered immediately. It was then so refreshing to be able to speak to a real person, Roozbeh, who was friendly, patient, knowledgeable and helpful. Thank you."

"When I realised there was a problem with the cover for new policy. I phoned the customer care team & I got through straight away. Once I explained what I needed the agent gave me a price and completed the transaction It was a quick efficient service . I was very impressed with the service."

"Website easy to navigate, nothing horrendous there. Received my paperwork quickly by email and text so no chance of me losing it if needed. Stress Free."

"Good value for a couple."

"Being a person with health conditions it can be more difficult to obtain insurance and cover for you helped me with no drama or being penalised either. Thanks so much."

"Quick and easy to buy with not too many add ons slowing the process down or rising the price beyond initial quotation."

"I honestly cannot recommend CoverForYou enough. You always get travel insurance but never think that you will use it. In a time when so many other things were going wrong (my elderly mum had fallen, broken her hip and was seriously ill) the team at CoverForYou were sympathetic, helpful, gave great advice and took the additional stress from having to cancel a holiday out of our hands. The whole claim process was easy and they paid out our claim very quickly. Thank you so much to the team."

"Good cover for those with existing medical issues at great price. Only made a claim once back in 2012 and they were spot on and help was at hand very quickly"

"Both me and my girlfriend got food poisoning while in the Dominican Republic. Cover for You handled everything after the first and only phone call we made to them. We did not have to pay out and claim back they dealt with everything. Will be my go to each and every year from now on."

And most negative reviews lately are related to a slow claims process, which CoverForYou says is due to the claims handler being extremely busy due to the volume of travel disruption in the last several months. They say most cases are resolved within 10 weeks, but not all are and this time frame is frustrating to some people. And some people are frustrated because they expect cover outside of what they purchased or when they don't follow the terms and conditions of the policy. For example:

"As other reviewers have suggested the timeline for claims being resolved just gets longer and longer every-time you contact. Apart from spending a long time on the phone to find out whats happening you receive no other communication."

"... Sold us a £200+ policy under the title diamond cover and apparently it does not cover "travel disruption". Staggering!!" (Editor's note: this is an optional add on)

"... left my Apple watch on the beach, when putting a claim through I was told I needed a police report now." (Editor's note: The policy wording does state that you must "report the theft or loss of any gadgets to the Police within 48 hours of discovery and obtain a crime reference number in support of a theft claim and a lost property number in support of an accidental loss claim."

FAQs

We checked the Policy Wording from the Coverforyou website, which says that "scuba diving to 18 metres (if qualified or accompanied by qualified instructor and not diving alone, not involved in cave diving and not involved in air travel until more than 24 hours have elapsed after your last dive)" is covered as standard without extra charge. If you want to scuba diving to 30 metres you'll need to buy their Additional Sports Pack 2; for up to 40 metres you'll need Pack 3.

How does CoverForYou Travel Insurance Compare to Competitors?

To better understand the value of CoverForYou travel insurance you need to look at it in the context of other available options. We compared it to other plans in the market so you can see which may be more suitable for you.

CoverForYou Travel Insurance vs Insure & Go Travel Insurance

Insure & Go travel insurance is another travel specialist provider offering some economical holiday cover. Cancellation cover ranges from £1,000 to £10,000 and Baggage from £750 up to £3,000, with prices starting from around £5 for a single trip to Europe. Emergency Medical starts at £5 million and goes up to unlimited cover on top tier plans. The Valuables extension upgrade may be useful if you want more cover for gadgets like mobile phones, laptops, etc. to provide £1k or £2k of valuables cover, starting at a cost of £5.90.

Bottom Line: Insure & Go is another reliable option for travel cover with the option to add more cover for gadgets, especially if you want travel insurance for coronavirus.

CoverForYou Travel Insurance vs Saga Travel Insurance

Saga travel insurance is offered as one, simple travel insurance plan to those over 50 years of age—with no upper age limit. We like that Saga includes cover for Catastrophe and a higher level of Personal Belongings/Baggage cover on all policies, plus Golf. Another perk is that travellers whose international flight is delayed more than 2 hours can benefit from access to a LoungeKey airport lounge, as part of Trip Delay cover. While travellers can be covered of any age, prices do rise steadily for older customers.

Bottom Line: If you are an older traveller, especially in your 70s or 80s, Saga may be a more viable travel insurance option for you, as they specialize in "mature" travellers.
