CoverForYou Travel Insurance Review: What You Need to Know

CoverForYou offers a range of holiday cover plans to suit a variety of budgets and coverage needs, from those looking to cover a single holiday in Europe with budget cover for less than £7, up to those needing insurance for more valuable holidays worth up to £7,500.

Top tip: Travel Disruption cover is an extra add on and is only available when buying direct. Keep this in mind if you want cover against coronavirus!

There are basically two ways to buy CoverForYou holiday cover—direct from their website or from a comparison site like Compare Cover. What's the main difference? Basically, the plans offered from comparison sites are a bit cheaper—partly because they provide lower cover limits and have higher excess levels.

The CoverForYou plan with the highest cover (£7.5k Cancellation and £3,000 of Baggage) is the Platinum plan, which is available direct from comparison sites. Those who don't need that much cover may very well find a cheaper deal from a comparison site like Compare Cover. But see below to understand some of the other differences between plans bought direct or from a comparison site, especially if you're worried about coronavirus.

Are Mobile Phones Covered? Mobile phones are covered (up to £250 or £500) on all plans bought direct. We imagine these levels may be too low for most people, given we tend to travel with more than one gadget and they can cost hundreds of pound each. If you want £1,000 to £3,000 of total gadget cover you can buy the Extended Gadget Cover option, which can be added to policies bought direct and policies bought from a comparison site. Expect to pay anywhere from £11.75 to £69 for the Extended Gadget Cover option, more details of which can be found in the Gadget section.

To see a list of other companies that offer a gadget travel insurance add on please see our article, Travel Insurance Companies with Optional Gadget Cover.

Does CoverForYou Travel Insurance Cover Trips in the UK? Holidays in the UK are covered under CoverForYou Annual, Multi-trip policies, so long as you have pre-booked at least two nights’ accommodation in a hotel, motel, holiday camp, bed and breakfast, holiday cottage or similar accommodation rented for a fee.

Pre-Existing Conditions: As part of the online application you'll be asked a series of brief medical questions. If you have a medical condition, CoverForYou may be able to offer cover for some pre-existing medical conditions, for which you may need to pay a higher premium. Pre-existing conditions are only covered if they've been fully declared, accepted and paid for.

How do CoverForYou Prices Compare?

Generally speaking, holiday cover from CoverForYou is lower than the average cost of travel insurance, with policies bought from a comparison site coming in well below average. Policies bought direct from CoverForYou come in slightly higher than policies bought from a comparison site, regardless of whether your travel plans will take to you Europe, America or elsewhere, as you can see in the following chart.

CoverForYou Gadget Cover

As you can see in the Policy Limits, plans bought directly from CoverForYou include a low level (£250 or £500) of Gadget cover to protect mobile phones, iPads, etc. If, like many people, you travel with gadgets worth more than these low limits, you want to consider buying Extended Gadget Cover, which provides cover of £1k, £2k or £3k of total gadget cover (max £500, £750 or £1,000 per item), depending on which option you choose. Extended Gadget Cover can be added to both policies bought direct from CoverForYou or from a comparison site like Compare Cover.

Expect to pay £21 to £69 for Annual, Multi-trip policies or £11.75 to £22.25 for Single trip policies, depending on the plan and level of cover. (The average cost of optional Gadget travel cover market-wide is £35 for Annual, Milti-trip policies and £13.50 for Single Trip policies.)

Buying Direct vs Using a Comparison Site

Generally speaking, the cheapest CoverForYou holiday cover plans are available through comparison sites, whereas the plan with the highest cover is available direct from the CoverForYou website. Beyond that, there are pros and cons to both sources in terms of features and price points. We'll try to explain some of the differences to help you decide whether buying direct or through an aggregator comparison site better suits your particular needs.

Below is a table detailing the differences in Standard excess, upper age limits and maximum trip lengths. You'll notice that the details for trip length are similar no matter where you buy (but will change by plan), however the excess and upper age limits are generally more favourable on plans bought direct rather than from a comparison site—depending on your age and situation, these details may or may not be important to you.

Buying CoverForYou via Comparison Site

As you can see in the policy limits sections below, policies bought from the comparison site arguably offer better cover than those bought direct for features such as Hospital Benefit, Personal Accident, Delayed Departure, Missed Departure, Baggage, Baggage Delay, Valuables and Legal expenses—that is, the cheapest plans from each source offer higher limits across those categories, and so on.

Generally speaking, the best deals on CoverForYou travel insurance can be found at a comparison site like Compare Cover. However, there is less difference in price between the comparison site policies and direct policies than you'll find from other travel insurance providers. Perhaps this is because the plans offered from each website are more closely matched, with fewer differences.

While Gadget cover isn't included as standard, it can be purchased as an add-on extra for around £14 to £69, providing up to £1k, £2k or £3k of total gadget cover (max £500, £750 or £1,000 per item) depending on the plan. However Travel Disruption cover is not available from some comparison sites—as standard or as an add-on—and the excess is generally higher on comparison site plans.

Buying CoverForYou Direct

Across some categories of cover, the travel insurance plans bought directly from CoverForYou offer higher limits than the comparable plans available on comparison sites, such as Cancellation, Holiday Abandonment and basic Gadget cover. In addition, CoverForYou is currently offering a £0 standard excess on plans bought direct. In addition, for an extra cost you can add travel insurance add-ons like travel disruption, golf or wedding cover to plans bought direct. These add ons are not available from comparison sites.

The upper age limits on direct plans is a touch higher—those up to age 70 can buy/renew an Annual, Multi-trip policies; the upper age limit on Single trips bought direct is 75. If you are over these upper age limits, you may be able to find suitable cover through a comparison site instead.

Bottom Line: If you're looking for a budget plan, Compare Cover offers three different CoverForYou holiday cover plans with prices ranging from £7 up to £76 (for a healthy, 35-year-old, individual traveller), depending on geography and level of cover (providing Cancellation cover from £1,500 to £6,000). Those looking to insure more valuable holidays worth up to £7,500 or who don't want to pay an excess might find a more suitable policy buying direct from CoverForYou, but expect prices to be a touch higher when you buy direct.

Types of CoverForYou Travel Insurance Policies

Direct from their website, CoverForYou offers three tiers of travel insurance—Silver, Gold and Platinum. From comparison sites they offer three different plans, which provide lower levels of cover as you can see in the following table—Emerald, Ruby and Diamond. All are available for Single Trips or as Annual, Multi-Trip policies.

Customer Reviews

Is Coverforyou any good? Coverforyou is rated very highly by customer, earning 4.7 out of 5 stars at Trustpilot, with 77% giving them a 5 star review. We scoured hundreds of reviews to learn what real customers have to say. Here are some positive reviews of Coverforyou:

"Good value for a couple."

"I honestly cannot recommend CoverForYou enough. You always get travel insurance but never think that you will use it. In a time when so many other things were going wrong (my elderly mum had fallen, broken her hip and was seriously ill) the team at CoverForYou were sympathetic, helpful, gave great advice and took the additional stress from having to cancel a holiday out of our hands. The whole claim process was easy and they paid out our claim very quickly. Thank you so much to the team."

"Good cover for those with existing medical issues at great price. Only made a claim once back in 2012 and they were spot on and help was at hand very quickly"

"Both me and my girlfriend got food poisoning while in the Dominican Republic. Cover for You handled everything after the first and only phone call we made to them. We did not have to pay out and claim back they dealt with everything. Will be my go to each and every year from now on."

And some negative reviews we saw were from customers complaining that they weren't covered for coronavirus (that would be covered by the "Travel Disruption" add on feature, which is not available from all comparison sites), lack of cover for problems with a package holiday (it's standard practice for package holidays to be covered by the package holiday provider) or difficulty claiming for lost items (a police report is required, as standard, and irresponsibly leaving an items somewhere may not be covered):

"Contacted coverforyou to ask about if FCO advise changes before our trip due to this virus. Were told that 'youre covered for this but not if you booked a package holiday'."

"... Sold us a £200+ policy under the title diamond cover and apparently it does not cover "travel disruption". Staggering!! "

"... left my Apple watch on the beach, when putting a claim through I was told I needed a police report now"

We checked the Policy Wording from the Coverforyou website, which says that "scuba diving to 18 metres (if qualified scuba diver or accompanied by qualified instructor and not diving alone or involved in cave diving)" is covered as standard without extra charge. If you want to scuba diving to 30 or 40 metres (if qualified scuba diver or accompanied by qualified instructor and not diving alone or involved in cave diving) you'll need to pay an extra premium ahead of time.

Coverforyou is a brand of Worldwide Internet Insurance Services (WIIS), an insurance intermediary licensed in Gibraltar by the Financial Services Commission under Permission Number 5570. WIIS also operates three other travel insurance brands in the UK: CedarTree, Outbacker and Insure & Escape.
From a Coverforyou representative: Claiming in the event of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office or other regulatory authority advising against all but essential travel is solely covered under Travel Disruption Cover; an optional add-on which is not available for purchase on certain comparison sites.

How does CoverForYou Travel Insurance Compare to Competitors?

To better understand the value of CoverForYou travel insurance you need to look at it in the context of other available options. We compared it to other plans in the market so you can see which may be more suitable for you.

CoverForYou Travel Insurance vs Insure & Go Travel Insurance

Insure & Go travel insurance is another travel specialist provider offering some economical holiday cover. Cancellation cover ranges from £1,000 to £10,000 and Baggage from £750 up to £3,000, with prices starting from around £5 for a single trip to Europe. Emergency Medical starts at £5 million and goes up to unlimited cover on top tier plans. The Valuables extension upgrade may be useful if you want more cover for gadgets like mobile phones, laptops, etc. to provide £1k or £2k of valuables cover, starting at a cost of £5.90.

Bottom Line: Insure & Go is another reliable option for travel cover with the option to add more cover for gadgets, especially if you want travel insurance for coronavirus.

CoverForYou Travel Insurance vs Saga Travel Insurance

Saga travel insurance is offered as one, simple travel insurance plan to those over 50 years of age—with no upper age limit. We like that Saga includes cover for Catastrophe and a higher level of Personal Belongings/Baggage cover on all policies, plus Golf. Another perk is that travellers whose international flight is delayed more than 2 hours can benefit from access to a LoungeKey airport lounge, as part of Trip Delay cover. While travellers can be covered of any age, prices do rise steadily for older customers.

Bottom Line: If you are an older traveller, especially in your 70s or 80s, Saga may be a more viable travel insurance option for you, as they specialize in "mature" travellers.
