Not sure if you should go with a large UK-wide company or a smaller, local installer? Below we discuss some of the pros and cons of each.

Should I use a local Welsh solar panel installer or a large UK-wide installer?

When deciding which type of installer to use—smaller, local vs. larger, national—here are some key factors to keep in mind:

Pros and cons of using a larger company

A larger, UK-wide company might be better at the following:

  • Quick quote turnaround
  • Offering lower prices due to volume discounts on hardware
  • Deep product knowledge (e.g., if they exclusively install a limited set of flagship products)

A larger company might be worse due to the following:

  • Installation teams are often outsourced or contracted out to third parties
  • Limited manufacturer options (e.g., they may only offer one or two types of panels)
  • The initial quote and technical survey might be conducted online or over the phone rather than on-site

Note: 'online' or 'phone' quotes and technical surveys are great for efficiency—you can often get a quote in literally minutes. However, an on-site technical survey can save you time in the long run and ensures the system is truly optimised for your roof. For example, it can be difficult for remote software to accurately estimate how many panels can actually fit around complex roof lines or chimneys. If your roof is small, you need a physical survey to safely maximise your panel count.

Pros and cons of using a local Welsh company

A local company might be better at the following:

  • Installation teams are much more likely to be in-house staff rather than sub-contractors
  • They possess hyper-local knowledge of the 'sunniness' and weather patterns in your specific Welsh valley or coastal town (ensuring accurate generation estimates)
  • More personalised "hand-holding" customer service
  • They are physically nearby in case of hardware faults or warranty claims
  • They default to on-site quotes and physical roof surveys
  • They are generally more open to sourcing specific equipment or panel brands you desire

A local company might be worse due to the following:

  • Quote turnaround and installation wait times might be slower
  • Because they do less volume, they may not be able to pass on the massive bulk-buy discounts that national brands offer

2026 Solar Panel FAQs for Wales

Are there any government grants for solar panels in Wales in 2026?

While direct cash grants specifically for solar panels are rare, homeowners in Wales can still take advantage of the UK Government's 0% VAT policy. Until 31 March 2027, you pay absolutely no VAT on the cost and installation of energy-saving materials, including solar panels and home battery storage. This effectively cuts 20% off your total installation bill.

Do I need an MCS-certified installer? Yes. If you want to get paid for exporting your excess solar energy back to the grid (via the Smart Export Guarantee or 'SEG' tariff), your solar panels must be fitted by an MCS-certified installer. All the Welsh installers listed in our table above carry active MCS accreditations.
