Does AXA cover delivery or courier driving?
According to our call to AXA customer service, AXA does not cover offer delivery driver insurance or permit policyholders to use their personal cars for delivery driving. They also don't permit policyholders to buy supplemental, top-up Hire & Reward (H&R) cover from another company for their delivery driving. This means AXA policyholders cannot use their cars to make deliveries.
H&R insurance is required by law for anyone getting paid to make deliveries with their vehicle. You can read all about H&R insurance in our in-depth guide to delivery driving and food delivery insurance.
We reached out to AXA's press team to confirm what we heard from the customer service member we spoke to, but they have not responded to us. If they do, we will update this article if needed. There are a few UK car insurers who work with top-up H&R cover for delivery people, but AXA is not one of them as far as we know.
Can I make deliveries without hire & reward cover?
No, you must not work as a delivery driver without H&R cover—it would be illegal. And it could invalidate your underlying social domestic & pleasure (SD&P) policy with AXA, leaving you uninsured for all your driving. Driving uninsured can mean points, fines, seizure of your car, having your licence taken away and possible financial ruin if you have an accident.
What do I do now?
If you have AXA car insurance and want to work as a delivery driver or courier, we believe you'll need to cancel this and find cover elsewhere. But call them to confirm before cancelling, as you don't want to incur cancellation fees unless necessary.
If AXA confirms that they won't cover delivery driving and they won't allow you to buy top-up H&R cover, you have two options for finding delivery driver insurance:
- Get SD&P from another car insurer and buy top-up H&R cover elsewhere (e.g., Zego), or
- Go to a specialist broker to secure cover for both SD&P (for your personal driving) and H&R (for your delivery driving).
You can learn more about Zego in our full Zego review. Essentially, the way top-up cover like Zego works is that a driver has a regular SD&P car insurance policy with one company that covers their personal driving, and then they buy top-up H&R insurance which covers their delivery driving. This only works if the underlying provider of the SD&P policy permits policyholders to buy top-up cover.
Be sure to do this
If you go with SD&P from one company and top-up H&R insurance from another company, you must inform your SD&P insurer of your delivery work and be sure they accept you buying top-up cover.
Also, be sure one of the policies covers your commute between home and work, and back again. Commuting is a formal 'declaration of use' on a certificate of motor insurance, and without this on your certificate you aren't covered during your commute. However, commuting shouldn't be listed on BOTH certificates, as this could lead to confusion regarding which company is liable if you have an accident during your commute.
Final thoughts
We recommend calling your insurer or potential insurers if you want to engage in paid delivery work, in order to confirm that you are covered on all fronts. That said, beware that not all car insurance customer support team members seem to know the rules as well as we'd hope—if you get a confusing or conflicted answer, perhaps ask the rep to check with the underwriting team, as they have the final say.
