How NimbleFins Reviews and Rates Insurance

At NimbleFins, we are a research and data-driven personal finance site, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), FRN 797621. Our insurance content is based on our own independent analysis — not on which insurers pay us the most. This page explains how we research, score, and compare insurance products across the six main categories we cover.

Our General Approach

Across all insurance lines, our analysis draws on four main sources: policy documents and terms, pricing tests, company financial filings with the FCA, and customer review data from platforms including Trustpilot and Reviews.co.uk. We look at coverage, price, and the customer experience together — because all of these factors impact the consumer experience and product suitability. Compensation from providers does not affect our ratings or written assessments.

Car Insurance

Car insurance is our most extensively researched product category, and we use a proprietary scoring system to rank the largest UK providers. We use a proprietary scoring system to rank the largest UK providers, drawing on more than 500 data points across 25+ tiers and brands from the 15 largest insurers in the UK.

Most data is refreshed each January (latest: January 2026). Provider size rankings are updated in June, when companies publish their SFCR regulatory reports (latest: June 2026).

The NimbleFins Car Insurance Scoring System

We score each provider out of 10 across eight categories, drawing on policy documents, FCA filings, real quotes, and customer review data:

  • Basic features — Does the insurer's cheapest, entry-level policy include the features most drivers expect, such as courtesy car cover and windscreen repair and replacement? A provider that makes customers pay extra for basics scores lower here.
  • Dream features — Is it possible to buy a fully loaded policy with all the desirable extras? This looks at the breadth of optional add-ons and the upper end of what coverage is achievable — things like EU cover, misfuelling protection, key cover, and high personal accident limits.
  • Flexibility — Can you customise a policy to suit your specific needs? This also considers admin fees: how much does it cost to make a mid-term change? Customisability is weighted at 60% of this category score and admin fees at 40%.
  • Breakup — How painful and costly would it be to leave? We look at cancellation fees and the different ways you can cancel (phone, online account, app, webchat). The easier and cheaper it is to walk away, the better a provider scores here.
  • Financial — How competitive are premiums? We gather real quotes for a sample driver profile using a popular car, good driving history, and a range of test postcodes, and compare these across providers. The quoted premium represents 33% of this category's score.
  • Customer ratings — We analyse customer review data at scale — our 2026 analysis drew on over 500,000 reviews — across platforms including Trustpilot and Fairer Finance.
  • Communication — How easy is it to contact the insurer when you need to? We look at the number of available channels (phone, webchat, app, online account), customer service opening hours, and how easy it is to find contact details on the insurer's website. A provider that buries its phone number or replaces human support with a frustrating chatbot scores lower here.
  • Popularity — How many people choose this insurer? We use gross written premium data from FCA filings as a proxy for market-wide consumer preference.

The final composite score is a weighted average across all eight categories, expressed out of 10.

Best Car Insurance: Popularity by Premiums Written

Our Best Car Insurance page takes a different approach. Rather than applying our quality scoring system, it ranks the largest UK motor insurers by gross written premiums — the total value of policies sold — based on our analysis of company financial filings. This gives readers an independent view of which insurers are most popular with UK consumers, which is a useful signal in itself. Admiral, UK Insurance (Direct Line, Churchill), and Aviva consistently rank among the largest.

Car Insurance Quote Research

When we report on the cost of car insurance — whether nationally, by city, or by driver profile — we gather real quotes for a defined sample driver: frequently a 35-year-old male with a full UK licence and five years' no-claims discount, driving a four-year-old Vauxhall Corsa or equivalent, parking on a private drive, and covering around 5,000 miles per year. Depending on the analysis, we may test across multiple postcodes, ages and vehicles, collecting hundreds or thousands of quotes along the way.

Home Insurance

Our home insurance reviews assess both buildings and contents cover, looking at the same core dimensions: what's included as standard, what requires an add-on, pricing relative to the market, and what customers say about their experience.

Key factors we examine include: sum insured limits and whether new-for-old replacement is offered, cover for accidental damage, alternative accommodation limits, and customer ratings from Trustpilot. We read policy documents to identify common exclusions — subsidence, storm damage to gates and fences, and high-value items above contents limits — and flag these clearly. We also flag unusual or missing aspects of cover. For providers offering multiple tiers, we start by assessing the entry-level product on its own merits, rather than assuming buyers will upgrade.

Pet Insurance

Pet insurance comparisons are complicated by the significant differences in policy structure across the market — accident-only, time-limited, maximum benefit, and lifetime plans are not directly comparable on price alone.

We sometimes compare price across a range of providers and coverage limits, to provide colour to readers regarding where providers sit in the marketplace. We assess: the type of cover offered (we consider lifetime cover the gold standard for dogs and cats), the annual vet fee limit and whether it resets each year, co-insurance requirements for older pets, hereditary and congenital condition coverage, pre-existing condition policies, and Trustpilot customer scores.

For breed-specific content, we apply a tailored set of criteria relevant to the health risks of that breed. For example, our Labrador Retriever pages assess orthopaedic waiting periods, bilateral condition exclusions, obesity-related condition cover, and whether the vet limit is structured per condition or as a shared annual pot — factors that matter much more for Labs than for breeds without those specific vulnerabilities.

Travel Insurance

We assess travel insurance policies on the coverage that frequently matters most to UK travellers: medical and repatriation cover limits, cancellation cover, baggage limits, and the treatment of pre-existing medical conditions.

We pay particular attention to: the definition of "family" in family policies (some are more restrictive than they appear), the excess payable per claim, and cover for adventurous activities, gadgets, natural disasters, etc. Where we produce country-specific content, we highlight destination-relevant considerations — for example, Spain and Portugal tourist taxes, the requirements for EHIC/GHIC use, or specific documentation requirements.

Customer satisfaction data is included for the providers we review.

Health Insurance

Private medical insurance (PMI) is a complex product where the range of cover — from basic hospital cash plans to comprehensive PMI — varies enormously. Our reviews focus on what's actually covered versus what's excluded, and we try to cut through the marketing language to give a realistic picture of what you'll get when you claim.

We look at: inpatient and outpatient cover limits, mental health cover, cancer cover, whether physiotherapy and consultations are included without a GP referral, the hospital network available, and how premiums evolve over time (some providers have a poor track record of sharp renewal increases). Customer ratings are included but considered carefully.

Business Insurance

Our business insurance content covers a range of products including public liability, employers' liability, professional indemnity, and combined business policies. We assess cover limits, the scope of what's insured, exclusions relevant to specific trades or sectors, and price.

Because business insurance needs vary considerably by business type, size, and sector, our reviews and guides are structured to help readers understand what type of policy might benefit them and what to look for. Where we review specific providers, we assess them against the needs of the most typical buyer of that product — usually a sole trader or small business owner.

A Note on Keeping Content Current

Insurance products premiums, features, and ratings can all change over time. We review and update our insurance content regularly and amend it as quickly as possible when we identify a material change. Typically, an in-depth review of a products policy wording is carried out at least annually. But because terms can change after we publish, we always recommend verifying current details directly with the insurer before buying.
