Uber-approved insurers

In 2026, Uber continues to maintain a restricted panel of approved insurance providers for its UK drivers. As of the current market, the approved list includes: Antilo, Acorn/Haven, Nelson, Inshur, and Zego.

While Uber occasionally reviews this panel, these five providers remain the primary partners integrated with Uber’s real-time data sharing systems. Drivers must ensure their Private Hire insurance is issued by one of these specific companies to be accepted on the platform.

The restriction to a specific panel of insurers allows Uber to utilize its Instadoc system, which is now the established standard for document verification. Uber successfully transitioned to Instadoc to streamline the approval process; by integrating directly with these five insurers, the system automatically verifies a driver’s insurance status in real-time. This eliminates the manual upload of paper certificates and ensures that drivers are never on the road without active, valid cover.

While some drivers have voiced concerns online about a small number of insurers cornering the Uber driver insurance market (and the long-term impact it might have on how Uber insurance is priced), the measures should go some way to reassure customers that all drivers are properly covered. In years past, there were instances of drivers uploading fake insurance documents through the Uber app.

You can read more about the partners on the Uber site here.

What do I need to do now?

For new drivers signing up in 2026, or existing drivers looking to switch policies, you must select a provider from the approved panel before your vehicle can be activated on the app.

If you are currently insured with a provider outside of this panel, you will need to move your cover to an approved insurer once your current policy expires. If you choose to switch mid-term, be mindful of potential cancellation fees or 'short-term' rate adjustments from your previous insurer, as Uber does not provide financial compensation for the costs of switching providers.

Driver Concerns

Many drivers on popular UK Uber driver forums such as r/uberdrivers and UberPeople have voiced concerns that such a small number of providers will only see already expensive Uber insurance continue to rise, with one user sarcastically commenting "I am sure they have their workers best interests at heart"

However some also jumped to the defense of the moves, pointing out that the changes would bring a stop to unlicensed drivers harming the reputations of those who were properly covered. One driver wrote "there used to be dodgy people with their (fake) insurance and this will bring it to an end."

When Uber first introduced the restricted panel, industry experts like Daniel Fosker (CEO of Quotax) warned of driver anxiety regarding the lack of choice.

Looking back from 2026, the long-term impact on the market has been significant; while the Instadoc system has made onboarding much faster, some drivers argue that the lack of competition between a wider range of insurers has contributed to the steady rise in premium costs for the Private Hire sector. The 'closed shop' environment remains a point of contention for driver unions who advocate for a more open market to help drive down insurance overheads.

What next?

If you are considering a pay-as-you-go (PAYG) or 'top-up' insurance model, such as the one pioneered by Zego, it is vital to verify that your underlying personal car insurance is compatible. Many mainstream insurers still view PAYG commercial cover as an unauthorized 'double insurance' or a change in risk, which can lead to the cancellation of your Social, Domestic & Pleasure (SD&P) policy. To stay protected, consult our recently updated 2026 Guide to Insurers that Accept Top-Up Cover.

How to save money on new taxi insurance

It’s well known that insurers prefer older (traditionally less likely to be involved in an accident) drivers. While you can’t control your age to help save money, there are a few factors you can control to help reduce the cost of often expensive taxi cover.

  • Clean driving record
  • No prior driving related claims/convictions
  • Long history of no claims
  • Telemetrics (blackbox, dashcam, etc.)
  • Comparing quotes from multiple providers
  • Operating in “safer” areas (away from city centres, airports, etc.)
  • More years behind the wheel
