Considering buying an electric car, but not sure which one? It can help to understand which electric cars other British motorists are buying right now. To find out which EVs are most popular in the UK, we've dug into registration figures from the Department for Transport. Here's what we found.
Most Popular EVs in the UK
The Tesla Model Y is the most popular electric vehicle in the UK, according to the latest data from Q2 2024 when there were 6,825 new Tesla Model Y cars registered for the first time.
The second most popular battery EV is the Audi Q4, with 4,845 new vehicles registered for the first time in Q2 2024.
While Tesla is still popular, it is becoming less so. Politics aside, even back in mid-2024 Tesla was far less dominant in the battery electric car market than it was three years ago. For example, in 2021 there were 180% more Tesla vehicles registered for the first time than the second-most popular EV, the Kia e-Niro. But by mid-2024, Tesla's top model (Y) bought by only 40% car owners than the second most popular EV, the Audi Q4. We expect Tesla's dominance to continue its decline as consumer sentiment shifts away from Elon Musk and the competition increases from a wide array of alternative battery-electric vehicles.

Interestingly, the most popular EV used to be the Mitsubishi Outlander, but despite this success, Mitsubishi stopped selling cars in the UK.
