How much you pay for your campervan insurance in the UK can start from as low as £150-£200, but depending on the factors an insurer uses to evaluate your risk level could go as high as £1,100. These factors are, naturally, similar to those that you might be familiar with when insuring your other cars, vans or motorbikes, such as the age of the driver, the size/power of the engine and the vehicle's dimensions.

If you’re considering a way to get the family out of the house this summer and enjoy the best of the British weather, but haven’t yet decided on exactly how you’d like to do it, check out our guides to the average costs of motorhome insurance and caravan insurance, and take the opportunity to compare your options.

Do I Need Campervan Insurance?

Absolutely, yes. Driving any vehicle without proper insurance is illegal in the UK, so you risk punishment by being behind the wheel of a campervan without proper coverage. Sorting out coverage isn't too tricky, and you can even get quotes online, so doesn't need to cause a headache before you head out on your holidays.

How Much Does Campervan Insurance Cost?

Depending on your choice of model, make and the age of the vehicle, as well as the tier of cover, our research produced quotes (through a comparison website) between £440 and £1,160 per year for two popular models, a 2013 VW Campervan and a 2014 Ford Transit Custom. When getting sample quotes we noticed a difference of over £500 between the 1st and 5th least expensive quotes, which goes to show how important it is to shop around before making your purchasing decision.

There are probably a few reasons why the Transit Custom comes out so much more expensive. Firstly, comparison sites categorised the VW as a car and the Transit Custom as a van, meaning their algorithms might expect it to have valuable items left inside on travels (thus making it a more obvious target for theft). The Transit Custom was also about £7,000 more expensive than the VW in our example, which could also explain some (but probably not all) of the difference.

We were able to find quotes as low as £685 for the Transit Custom, so it doesn’t need to break the bank if you’re smart about buying. Try using an aggregator like QuoteZone to help find the best price possible.

Our research shows it may be possible to get quotes even cheaper than these by using specialist campervan insurers and brokers, who can reduce the cost of your cover assuming you’re not using the vehicle on a regular basis. Provided you’re not using the vehicle every week, you may be able to save as much as 50% on the cost of your policy, assuming you’re able to stick to the terms of the insurance agreement.

A salesperson we spoke to at a campervan insurance specialist did mention that the requirements to receive quotes in the £150-£300 range were fairly strict, so if you're a younger driver, don't have a long history of no claims or live in a city like London or Manchester then you can probably expect a quote to come out considerably more expensive than £300 annually.

Specialist Campervan Insurance

The price of campervan insurance quotes you find online (or through an aggregator—we used GoCompare for ours as they specifically advertise insurance for campervans) might be significantly more than you need to pay. Many specialist campervan insurers will be happy to offer you quotes starting around £150 per year, provided you're not using the campervan as a primary mode of transport (and therefore aren't clocking up big miles).

These companies are, generally speaking, much smaller than those you might find through a website like GoCompare, so you might need to call or email them to receive a quote. That being said, if you're looking to save a bit of money then it's well worth contacting a couple of specialists to see what they'd want to quote you.

There could be a few reasons that campervan insurance is so much more expensive through an aggregator, such as the quote form automatically treating the camper as a 'regular' vehicle (and not something you'll only use a few times a year) or, in some cases, that the vehicles are considered 'modified' and the algorithms behind the online quote take this as meaning you've fitted a turbocharger to your VW.

There's no guarantee specialist insurers will be able to offer you better quotes, but it's well worth shopping around. Comfort Insurance, as an example, advertise that over 10% of customers in 2020 paid £220 or less for their cover, so it is possible if you meet the criteria.

How To Save On Campervan Insurance?

Saving on campervan insurance doesn’t need to be any more complicated than saving on coverage for your other vehicles. Here are a few things you can do to make sure you get the best price possible:

  • Use a specialist campervan insurer, avoid generic car/van coverage
  • Get multiple quotes
  • Park your vehicle in a garage or on a driveway
  • Drive a less powerful/smaller make and model
  • Own a less expensive vehicle
  • Don’t add any additional drivers
  • Live in a location away from busy city centres (London, Manchester, etc.)

Do keep in mind, as with any insurance, it’s important to be honest with your insurer about things such as where you park your vehicle and the estimated value of the campervan. If they feel you’ve intentionally misled them, perhaps by saying you’d park the vehicle on a driveway and instead regularly park it away from your home overnight, they may be within their rights to invalidate your coverage and refuse to pay out on a claim.

FAQ’s

Can I insure my Van as a Campervan?

This depends entirely on the insurer, broker or comparison site you use in order to generate your quote. In our research, websites like GoCompare tend to just qualify campers as either a car or a van, with no special qualification or specific campervan related cover.

Comparatively, aggregators like QuoteZone do offer bespoke campervan cover, which can account for factors such as whether or not it’s a converted van, how regularly in the year it’s used and whether or not the policy owner is a member of the Caravan Club.

As always, shop around to find the best deal, and keep in mind some providers might not offer the bespoke product you’re looking for.

Is Campervan insurance cheaper?

As a general rule yes, campervan insurance should be less expensive than regular vehicle insurances.

Do keep in mind that campervan insurance can be both more or less expensive than regular car or van insurance, depending on the same variables used to estimate the cost of your other vehicle insurances. An especially expensive camper might still be more expensive to insure than an older car or van, for example.

Can I drive a Campervan on my car insurance?

Your campervan requires its own insurance policy (that you’re either the policy owner for, or a named driver on) before you’re able to get behind the wheel. Keep in mind that you cannot be on the roads in the UK without the correct insurance, and driving without proper cover can lead to fines, penalty points and even suspension/disqualification from driving.

Direct Line does not offer bespoke campervan insurance. That being said, they may still be willing to insure your vehicle. Your best bet will be to call them up and speak with a sales representative to get a proper answer.

No, your travel insurance will not provide you with vehicle insurance if you’re hiring a campervan. However, the company loaning you the vehicle should provide you with insurance that has already been costed into the price of the rental.
