Average Cost of Motorhome Insurance 2026

Compare Motorhome Insurance

Protect your motorhome today. Quick quotes from dozens of insurers.

By law you need motorhome insurance, which will cost you around £500 for a popular motorhome that's a few years old and valued around £50,000. However, the cost of motorhome insurance will vary depending on factors such as how much your motorhome is worth, where you store it, security features and the number of drivers on your policy.

See how motorhome premiums can vary across these parameters, or compare to the cost of caravan insurance, which is usually cheaper. Use our analysis may help you identify a good deal when you see it, but keep in mind these are just sample quotes and your premium might vary significantly depending on your details in 2026.

Average Cost of Motorhome Insurance

According to our latest research, the average cost of cheap motorhome insurance is currently around £615 per year for our sample driver with a standard motorhome valued at £55,000.

Generally speaking, motorhome insurance premiums increase with the value of your RV; just like the cost of car insurance premiums, motorhome premiums are typically higher for more expensive vehicles as they present a larger risk to insurance underwriters in the case of damage or theft (i.e., more expensive vehicles cost more to repair or replace).

Here are sample premiums for our sample driver for some of the most popular UK motorhomes, as determined by our motorhome insurance partner QuoteZone:

How Much is Motorhome Insurance for Popular RVs? (for 4-year-old RVs)ModelMarket ValueCost of Motorhome Insurance
ElddisSunseeker£55,000£615
Auto-TrailTracker EKS£58,500£830
Auto-TrailApache 364£65,000£1,180
SwiftKon-Tiki Sport 599£75,000£1,300

For example, a four-year-old Elddis Sunseeker valued at £55,000 costs roughly £615 to insure (in this article, the quoted figures reflect the average of the five cheapest quotes we found for motorhomes stored on a driveway with a barrier).

Every additional £5,000 of motorhome value translated into an additional premium of roughly £210 - £225 per year, but at motorhome values approaching £80K the rate of increase lessened.

Cost of Motorhome Insurance with Additional Security Features

While security features cost money to install, these costs can be partially offset by lower motorhome insurance premiums.

NimbleFins tests have shown that adding a wheel clamp (on top of a factory-fitted alarm, which we assumed as a standard minimum security feature) dropped the insurance premium around 12% on average (e.g. £72 on a £600 premium).

Adding active Cobra/Vodafone tracking saved an average of 18% on the premium (e.g. £108 on a £600 premium).

Can I save money with a TPO or TPFT policy?

Not necessarily. Despite Comprehensive being the 'best' type of motorhome insurance, because it covers road traffic accident damage (which TPFT and TPO don't), Comprehnsive is typically the cheapest type of motorhome insurance. Which makes comprehensive absolutely the best value (most cover; lowest price). You'll have to check your personal quotes to be sure this holds for you as well, but our tests show that TPFT and TPO cost 35% more on average than Comprehensive motorhome insurance. A bit of a no brainer to buy Comprehensive!

Cost of Motorhome Insurance by Storage Location

Where you store your motorhome has a massive impact on the cost of insurance, because the location determines the risk of theft.

Our tests showed insurance was the cheapest for motorhomes stored at home in a locked garage. But most people don't have this storage option. How much extra will you pay for different storage options?

NimbleFins found that storing at a high end CaSSOA site was the second-cheapest insurance option, with rates 10% higher than a home-based locked garage. Low end CaSSOA sites raised the premium by a whopping 54% on average. If you store at a caravan storage site, you'll find that insurance premiums vary significantly depending on the site, reflecting the experience an insurer has had (e.g., past thefts).

Storage location has a big impact on motorhome insurance premiums
Locked garage at homebest premium
CaSSOA site (high end)+10%
At home on the driveway with barrier+14%
At home on the road+19%
CaSSOA site (low end)+54%

Cost of Motorhome Insurance with Additional Drivers

Adding drivers to your motorhome insurance policy typically increases the price, which rises incrementally with each driver. Our sample driver would have paid around 7% additional premium (e.g. £35 on a £500 premium) to add a driver with a good driving record and experience behind the wheel of a motorhome, however the additional cost will depend on the value of your motorhome, the annual mileage, driving record of the additional driver, etc. Most insurers allow you to add up to four additional drivers, a few allow up to six.

FAQs

No, you cannot drive a motorhome on your standard car insurance—a motorhome is a heavy, modified, self-propelled vehicle and needs its own specialist insurance policy. In fact, it's a legal requirement to have insurance for your motorhome before taking it on the road. Find out how much motorhome insurance will cost you by comparing quotes from nearly a dozen specialists with our comparison engine partner QuoteZone—there's only one form to fill out and it takes just 2 minutes.
This depends heavily on how your motorhome is classified. If your new motorhome is registered as an M1 Special Purpose vehicle and its CO2 emissions are listed on the approval certificate, it is taxed based on emissions. As of recent VED hikes, the first-year tax for the most polluting new vehicles (over 255g/km) has doubled to a massive £5,490! Furthermore, if its list price was over £40,000, you will pay a luxury "Expensive Car Supplement" of roughly £440 on top of the standard £200 rate for years 2 to 6 (totalling ~£640 a year).

However, if your motorhome is classified under Private Light Goods (TC11, under 3500kg), you avoid the emissions-based system and simply pay a flat rate of roughly £360 a year. Add this to the cost of your motorhome insurance (usually £600 to £1,200) to find your total annual running costs.

Motorhome insurance in 2026 often costs in the region of £600 to £1,200 a year, but motorhome insurance costs depend heavily on factors like the model, the current market value, the driver's age, and crucially, where you store your motorhome.
LV does not typically underwrite standalone motorhome insurance directly to consumers—to find a motorhome insurance policy, compare quotes here from nearly a dozen specialists. There's only one form to fill out and it takes just 2 minutes.
Direct Line does not offer specialist motorhome insurance—to find a motorhome insurance policy, compare quotes here from nearly a dozen specialists. There's only one form to fill out and it takes just 2 minutes.
Insurance is one of the big annual expenses of owning a motorhome, and due to recent market inflation, typically costs in the range of £600 to £1,200 a year for a standard model. Click here to learn more about the cost of motorhome insurance.
Generally speaking, campervans are less expensive to insure than motorhomes—campervans are usually smaller (like converted panel vans) and slightly less valuable, making them less expensive for an insurance company to repair or replace than large coachbuilt motorhomes.
Yes, most motorhome insurance policies will include EU travel cover. If you're planning a trip to the continent, actively look out for this feature. Read the policy wording to find out before you buy a policy—some premium policies include up to 365 days of full EU travel cover.

Methodology

To arrive at our average cost analysis, we gathered dozens of online quotes for motorhome insurance and adjusted these figures in 2026 to reflect the current marketplace. We priced policies for four popular motorhomes:

  • Elddis Sunseeker
  • Auto-Trail Tracker EKS
  • Auto-Trail Apache 364
  • Swift Kon-Tiki Sport 599

Unless otherwise noted, motorhomes are driven by a 40-year-old main driver with a good driving history and no motorhome NCD but 5 years of car NCD, come with factory-fitted security, are stored on a driveway with a barrier, and are 4 years old. We averaged the 5 cheapest quotes that we could find to give an idea of what a motorhome owner would need to pay for a policy.

Oftentimes, the cheapest policies offer fewer features. The best policy for your needs may cost more or less depending upon your profile, the details of your motorhome and the type of policy you want, when you buy insurance, etc. Use the data in this article as an informative guide only to see how premiums can vary depending on various factors.
