Vehicle crime trends

Is vehicle crime getting worse in England... or better?

Overall, it certainly appears that the rate of vehicle crimes is on the decline. In particular, the rate of thefts from a vehicle has dropped significantly over the past 20 years, from a rate of 9.5 to 3.2 per 1,000 population—a drop of 66%!

And compared to 20 years ago, the rate of thefts of vehicles has also declined, from a rate of 4.6 to 2.2 vehicle thefts per 1,000 population. However, this rate has increased recently. After a low of 1.3 thefts of vehicles per 1,000 people back in 2014 and 2015, in 2024 this had climbed to 2.2, a rise of 67%.
