How much is a Kia Sportage? Full costs revealed.

Thinking about buying a Kia Sportage? The Kia Sportage remains one of the UK's most sought-after vehicles, finishing 2025 as the second most popular car with 47,788 registrations, narrowly behind the Ford Puma. But how much does it cost to buy and run? The NimbleFins car insurance experts have run the numbers on purchase prices for new and used cars, insurance and road tax. Here's what we found.

Kia Sportage Price

In 2025/2026, starting OTR Kia Sportage prices have been adjusted to reflect rising manufacturing costs. The entry-level Kia Sportage '2' now starts from £29,890, a modest increase of £500 from the previous year. For those seeking higher specifications, the GT-Line starts from £32,390, while the hybrid and plug-in hybrid models now begin at £35,985 and £40,575 respectively.

But rarely are vehicles sold at starting OTR prices, because cars often include some extras (e.g. premium paint) that raise the price.

The NimbleFins car data experts have dug into publicly available new and used car data to learn how much motorists are really paying for their Kia Sportage cars. Across the range of available trims and powertrains, the average starting OTR price for a brand-new Kia Sportage is now approximately £35,005. This aligns with broader market trends for popular SUVs like the Nissan Qashqai and Tesla Model Y. Beyond the purchase price, owners should budget for the average annual car running cost in the UK, which rose to £3,484 in 2025.

Cost of a new Kia Sportage

For 2026, the Kia Sportage continues to offer a wide range of trim levels, from the entry-level "Pure" to the high-spec "GT-Line S." The On-The-Road (OTR) prices now reflect the latest 2025/2026 tax regulations and manufacturing adjustments.

Here are the starting OTR prices for the 2026 Kia Sportage range across various trim and engine configurations:

Cost of a used Kia Sportage

As with all vehicles, the cost of a used Kia Sportage declines with car age. NimbleFins analysis of over 1,000 Kia Sportage vehicles indicates that cars lose around £2,500 if they are resold in their first year, then approximately £3,000 the second year and another £5,000 the third year. Surprisingly the depreciation seems to accelerate—reasons for this can include high interest in newer cars with more advanced features and technology, plus extra pressure on 3-year-old car prices as many come out of leases at that point and enter the used car market. This market phenomenon impacts all makes and models of cars.

Notably, the average age of cars on UK roads has hit a record 9.6 years, as owners retain their vehicles for longer periods. A 2-3 year old Kia Sportage now costs around £24,000 in the used car market:

Used Kia Sportage CostAgeAverage Price
2025 regLess than 1 year old£32,853
2024 reg1 - 2 years old£29,624
2023 reg2 - 3 years old£23,956

Kia Sportage Insurance Costs

NimbleFins market tests of hundreds of car insurance quotes found that a low-risk driver could pay as little as £500 a year to insure a new Kia Sportage with comprehensive cover. Prices can vary significantly across driver profiles (e.g. age, driving record, location, etc.) but also by type of vehicle. Generally speaking, more expensive cars cost more to insure. We found this to be the case with the Kia Sportage, when we assessed insurance prices for a petrol, a petrol hybrid and a plug-in hybrid (because they differ in cost). And specific mid-sized SUVs like the Sportage often attract higher premiums due to rising repair costs and parts scarcity.

Our tests showed that for Kia Sportage, a petrol hybrid costs around 6% more to insure than a petrol; and a plug-in hybrid cost around 11% more to insure than a petrol. This will be driven in part by higher car values for hybrid vehicles.

Kia Sportage Road Tax Cost

The road tax for a new Kia Sportage depends on the type of fuel / energy and the list price. Owners must account for major regulatory changes effective from 1 April 2025; electric and low-emission vehicles are no longer exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). The standard annual road tax rate has risen to £190. Critically, many Sportage trims (specifically hybrids and PHEVs) now have a list price exceeding £40,000, triggering the £410 'luxury car' supplement. This brings the total annual tax bill to £600 for the first five years of ownership.
