How much is an MG HS? Full costs revealed.
Thinking about buying a MG HS? As of late 2025, there are over 34.35 million cars registered in the UK, a record high that underscores the competitive nature of the current market. Within this landscape, the consumer shift toward premium and luxury brands (which includes the high-spec MG Trophy levels) has accelerated significantly, now accounting for 27% of all licensed cars in the UK, up from just 19% a decade ago.
MG HS Price
The NimbleFins car data experts have dug into publicly available new and used car data to learn how much motorists are really paying for their MG HS cars. Here's what we found.
Cost of a new MG HS
While the MG HS remains a value leader, it sits in a market where the average starting OTR price for a medium SUV has climbed to between £29,890 and £44,990. This price gap highlights the MG’s appeal, especially considering that new car prices have surged 39% since 2015, while used car prices have risen by only 16% over the same period, making the HS’s competitive positioning even more critical for budget-conscious buyers.
Cost of a used MG HS
NimbleFins analysis of over 600 MG HS vehicles in the used car market indicates that cars depreciate around 13-14% a year for the first few years. This translates into a loss in value of over £3,000 in each of the first two years.
By early 2026, the MG HS is tracking almost exactly at the national median for its age group, as the median price for a used car in the UK now sits at £16,000. Interestingly, the average age of cars on UK roads has reached a record 9.6 years, as owners hold onto their vehicles longer to avoid the high costs of new car debt.
MG HS Insurance Costs
With the average cost of UK car insurance reaching £551 annually by late 2025, low-risk drivers can expect to see their quotes rise accordingly. Owners of the HS PHEV model should be particularly prepared for higher costs; electric and hybrid vehicles are generally 25% more expensive to repair than their petrol equivalents due to specialist parts and labor, a major factor in the higher premiums for the hybrid variant.
Your insurance prices will certainly vary; use this information as a rough guide as to starting insurance costs and to see how they might vary by fuel type and trim level. To find out your MG HS insurance costs, use the quote calculator below:
MG HS Road Tax Cost
The road tax for a new MG HS is highly variable, due to the range of fuel types, engines and list prices.
From 1 April 2025, major regulatory changes mean PHEV drivers are no longer exempt from standard car tax. New MG HS PHEVs registered after this date will pay a nominal first-year rate of £10, but will then move to a standard rate of £190 per year from the second year onwards. Furthermore, if your HS (including optional extras) has a list price exceeding £40,000, you will be liable for a £410 'luxury car tax' supplement each year for five years.
