According to analysis of latest market insurance data, a low-risk driver in 2026 can expect to pay between £385 and £490 a year to insure a standard ICE (internal combustion engine) VW Golf. Due to the higher repair costs associated with hybrid technology and its increased performance, the GTE trim now typically costs our sample driver over £615 a year to insure, reflecting the broader rise in UK premiums over the past 24 months.

VW Golf Road Tax Cost

The road tax for a 2026 VW Golf is dictated by the latest DVLA VED (Vehicle Excise Duty) bands. Standard models now fall into a range of £210 to £680 per year for the first-year rate, depending on CO2 emissions. Crucially, as of April 2025, even the hybrid GTE no longer benefits from a £0 first-year rate and must pay a minimum alternative fuel rate.

Furthermore, any Golf with a list price exceeding £40,000 (common for high-spec GTE or GTI models) will incur the 'Expensive Car' supplement of £410 annually for five years starting from the second time the vehicle is taxed.

With so many variants on the market, you can check the road tax for a specific car on the gov or Parkers website.
