Cheap Car Insurance for Women

There are a few cheap car insurance brands aimed at women, such as Diamond, Go Girl and Sheilas' Wheels. Should you go with them if you're a woman? Not necessarily.

NimbleFins market tests show that women are likely to get a cheaper car insurance quote from a mass-market brand that is not gender focused. So if price is the priority then a women should compare quotes from the market and not limit themselves to women-targeted car insurance. With a choice of well over 100 brands on most comparison engines, why limit yourself?

Plus, the car insurance providers for women have a few flaws, in our opinion, that can be avoided by going to a gender-neutral car insurance provider.

As of 2026, Sheilas' Wheels continues to charge up to 12p per minute for customer service calls, including claims and renewals, whereas many competitors now offer inclusive or geographic-rate (01/02/03) numbers. Regarding child safety, both Sheilas' Wheels and Go Girl maintain a replacement limit of £100 per child car seat following a valid claim, which may not cover the full cost of high-end modern seats. In contrast, Diamond remains a stronger choice for parents, offering to cover the full replacement cost of a child seat regardless of whether there is visible damage.

Cheap female car insurance

While most standard insurers group handbags under general 'personal belongings,' female-focused brands still offer specific separate limits.

For 2026, Diamond offers the most generous protection with up to £300 specifically for a handbag and its contents, on top of £200 for other personal items. Go Girl and Sheilas' Wheels both provide up to £200 for handbags, though Go Girl's general personal belongings limit is slightly lower at £150.

Cheap car insurance for woman driver

Numerous studies show that women pay less for car insurance than men on average.

A woman driver may have an easier time finding cheap car insurance because their profile is less risky than a man's (but this certainly varies from woman to woman!), such as fewer miles driven per year, fewer past driving offences and a safer choice of car. Simply put, more men have risk factors in their profile that will lead to higher premiums.

Overall, women drive less than men. Recent 2025/2026 National Travel Survey data confirms that women continue to drive fewer miles on average than men, which remains a key factor in their lower risk profile. On average, men now travel 6,549 miles per year—roughly 16% further than women, who average 5,633 miles per year. This mileage gap has widened slightly as commuting patterns shifted in the mid-2020s.

And a woman driver is also likely to get cheaper car insurance because women have fewer collisions than men.

The latest Department for Transport (DfT) figures for 2025 show that male drivers still account for approximately 79% of all drink-drive related collisions. Female drivers are involved in significantly fewer incidents across all levels of severity, maintaining a consistent trend of lower alcohol-related road risk.

Drink drive collisions (2026 estimates)MenWomenWoman driver rate is lower by...
Fatal collisions21010-95%
Serious collisions (adjusted)980140-86%
Slight collisions (adjusted)2,460700-72%
Total collisions3,650850-77%

That said, since the Gender Directive was passed by the European Court of Justice in 2012, it is illegal for insurers to consider gender when calculating premiums. So a woman driver and a man driver should pay the same premium for cheap car insurance—if they have a similar profile.

Cheap car insurance for young female drivers

Many young drivers opt for a telematics car insurance policy to save money on their premium, and young female drivers might see an even larger pricing benefit in the long run (compared to male drivers). Why? Not to cast aspersions on young male drivers, but they might tend to drive in ways (e.g. faster acceleration, heavier braking) that trigger yellow or red warnings from the telematics tracking system. Whereas young female drivers might (yes, generalising here...) be better at driving habits that keep the tracking system happy and result in lower premiums upon renewal (compared to males). In theory...

NimbleFins' study of the young driver market found that telematics (black box) insurance remains the most effective way to lower premiums. Comparing the top five cheapest standard policies against telematics options, a young female driver can now save an average of £379 (roughly 21%) per year. For 17-20 year-olds specifically, over 78% of drivers found that a telematics policy was their cheapest available option. Of course, your rates and relative savings may vary so be sure to compare prices of both types of policies before committing.
