How much is Courier/Delivery Driver Car insurance?

Don’t be surprised if you find getting quotes difficult, especially as a younger driver—big insurers and underwriters tend to steer well clear of offering policies for couriers or delivery drivers.

Our research indicates that a typical delivery driver can expect to pay £220 per month for TPO cover and around £261 per month for comprehensive (approximately £3,100 per year). These are quotes taken from Zego, who drivers consistently rate as one of the most cost effective options for courier coverage.

Do be careful though—Zego’s pay-as-you-go hourly/top-up coverage may invalidate your existing policy, so check out our guide to when you are and aren’t covered. If your current car insurer won’t work with Zego, you should get quotes for a new policy that covers hire & reward as well as your social, domestic, pleasure and commuting driving.

Average Cost of Courier Car InsuranceMonthly Cost
Third Party Only£220
Comprehensive£261

You may have found getting quotes challenging—very few insurers are keen to take on couriers due to the increased risk. These risks include long hours on the road, the “rush” to get a delivery to its destination on time and the distraction of your application/accepting orders. While this can be frustrating, it’s important to make sure you get it right—driving without valid insurance is illegal in the UK.

If you're considering becoming a courier or delivery driver, make sure to inform your existing insurance provider as soon as possible—if you’re involved in an accident and haven’t informed them then you risk voiding your coverage entirely.

How much is Courier Van insurance?

A comprehensive courier van insurance policy is likely to cost from around £1,700. This is nearly 50% cheaper than TPFT (£3,264) and TPO (£3,183). While this won’t be the case with every insurer, we’d recommend looking at Comprehensive coverage as your first option for Van coverage. Research by uSwitch paints a similar picture—perhaps suggesting that safer drivers are more likely to seek a higher level of coverage, despite being less likely to ever need it.

The van courier market is well established, and most of the major UK insurance players will be happy to offer you a quote, so shop around and find the best deal (you can get started with our partner QuoteZone here). And as you might be carrying more expensive goods than those on a motorbike or in a car, consider Goods in Transit insurance to protect the items you carry, whether they belong to you or someone else.

Our full guide to van insurance has some great tips on what drives the cost of your policy and some ideas on how you might save, so if you’re finding policies a bit too expensive check it out.

How much is Courier Motorbike insurance?

A courier motorcycle insurance policy is likely to be around £148 per month for a TPO policy, with comprehensive policies coming in around £195 per month. Many insurers will not offer third party, fire and theft (TPFT) coverage due to theft being much more likely for motorbike owners than car/van, preferring you to take a higher level of coverage.

Third Party Only£148

There are a few factors that impact insurance cost for bikes much more than other vehicles—with a focus on security. You may find you’re able to save a decent amount by keeping your bike locked in a garage overnight or installing an advanced anti-theft/tracking device, so have that in mind if you’re finding your quotes a little too pricey.

Why is Courier Insurance So Expensive?

Couriers are exposed to many of the same risks as other drivers on the road, however are often put into circumstances that can make incidents more likely. There are also a few things a courier is likely to do while on the road that a regular driver probably wouldn’t, such as parking on the kerb of a busy road to collect/deliver an item.

While this list is by no means conclusive, it should give you some ideas as to why insurers are charging so much (and why some don’t offer policies at all!)

  • Often driving for long hours consecutively
  • Unsociable driving hours
  • Stopping in dangerous spots or on busy roads
  • Risky driving style to meet tight deadlines

As with any vehicle insurance, age and driving/claims history play a massive part in determining the cost of your courier insurance.

And as courier work becomes a more popular option for younger, more 'risky' drivers and riders, if you are under-25 keep in mind you may have to pay a lot more than our estimates.

How Can I Save Money on Courier Insurance?

There are many ways to reduce the premium you pay—some that apply across vehicle insurance and some more specific to courier work. And while it’s unlikely you ever find quotes close to your Social, Domestic & Pleasure vehicle cover, courier insurance doesn’t have to make delivery work an unprofitable endeavour for you.

  • Compare multiple providers
  • Increase your voluntary excess
  • Pay annually instead of monthly
  • Install a blackbox/telematic
  • Operate in less busy/risky areas, such as away from city centres
  • Choose a vehicle that is popular with other drivers/riders
  • Choose a lower-value vehicle (e.g. a few years older)

For some, courier work may be a more temporary employment solution. If you’re considering paying annually instead of monthly, consider whether or not you’ll need the coverage for the full year. While you may have to pay a breakaway clause, it could still prove cheaper, so check with your provider and do the maths to see which works out best.
