Shell Energy, Virgin Media and BT Mobile sparked most complaints in their sectors, while Sky performed well.

The best and worst broadband, phone and paid-for TV providers for complaints have been named in new research by Ofcom.

EE sparked the most grievances with regulator Ofcom for its broadband, landline services and Pay-TV services.

EE received 10 complaints per 100,000 people for broadband, 8 complaints per 100,000 people for landline and 6 complaints per 100,000 for Pay-TV.

Industry averages were 8 complaints per 100,000 people for broadband, 4 complaints per 100,000 people for landline and 6 complaints per 100,000 for Pay-TV.

The best providers, in terms of complaints, were Plusnet for broadband (at 4 complaints per 100,000 people), Warehouse for landline (at 0 complaints per 100,000 people) and TalkTalk for Pay-TV (at 1 complaint per 100,000 people).

EE fared better in the pay-monthly mobile category, receiving 1 complaint per 100,000 (vs an industry average of 2 complaints/100,000). In the category, EE tied for best provider with Tesco Mobile and Vodafone.

EE users overall were most unhappy with faults, service and provisioning, with around 28-38% of complaints attributable to this category. Next, customers complained about billing, pricing and charges, and issues changing provider.

The category with the highest industry complaint average is broadband, where 8 in 100,000 customers submit a complaint to Ofgem. Faults, service and provisioning are most complained about (38%) followed by complaints handling (24%) and billing, pricing and charges (21%).

Anyone with problems with their providers should raise issues with their supplier first. If they are not happy, they can go to an independent ombudsman who will make a judgment on it.
