Tesco Bank Car Insurance Overall Review

Tesco Bank car insurance offers a solid set of features and is well worth considering.

If you are a loyal Tesco shopper and like the idea of having Tesco Bank car insurance, there are a few ways to save money on your policy. For instance, while it's good to check prices at comparison sites, it's worth noting that for those buying direct, Clubcard Members are guaranteed a discount so long as they tell Tesco their Clubcard number when they get a quote.

Tesco Bank has recently improved their car insurance offering; now they have three tiers of cover (Bronze, Silver and Gold).

Here's a quick overview of the differences:

  • Bronze: Comprehensive cover excluding damage to the windscreen
  • Silver: Comprehensive cover including damage to the windscreen
  • Gold: Comprehensive cover including damage to the windscreen, plus enhanced courtesy car, misfuelling, increased child seat cover, increased personal belongings cover and hotel accommodation after an accident.

And Tesco Bank customer reviews have improved in the past year or so, which is good. Please keep in mind that the Trustpilot and Reviews.co.uk ratings are based on Tesco Bank as a whole, which includes home insurance, travel money, credit cards, etc. We've read through hundreds of reviews to see what real customers have to say about their car insurance specifically. Here's some of what we found:

Tesco Bank has earned 4.3 stars out of 5 at Trustpilot from more than 25,000 customers, with nearly two thirds of customers giving Tescobank an 'Excellent' 5 star rating. Their rating has climbed in recent years, which we're happy to see.

Note: the last complaint is related to terms of the policy that specify no refund on add ons when you cancel a policy—this is quite common in the UK car insurance industry and not unique to Tesco. Many insurance complaints are by customers who don't fully understand the rules of the policy. It's a contract, so be sure to read the ins and outs so you're not unpleasantly surprised by some of the rules at a later date.

Reading the reviews and looking specifically into complaints, we noticed some issues with online systems, rates going up at renewal and unsatisfactory customer service. Tesco Bank Car Insurance Charges and Fees

According to the latest available terms of business we could find online, Tesco charges £40 as standard to cancel your policy after the initial 14-day window, but doesn't charge a fee to cancel during the cooling off period, which is a positive. Changes such as adding a driver or a change of address cost £25 to make over the phone and are free to make online through the customer portal.

Who Underwrites Tesco Bank Car Insurance?

Tesco Bank standard car insurance is underwritten by Tesco Underwriting Ltd. and is arranged by Tesco Personal Finance plc (trading as Tesco Bank), acting on behalf of Tesco Underwriting Ltd. In addition, their add-on insurance products are underwritten by a range of insurers, such as:

  • AXA UK plc
  • Aviva Insurance Ltd
  • Sabre Insurance Company Ltd
  • Zenith Insurance plc

Does Tesco do multi car insurance?

Unfortunately, Tesco car insurance does not give traditional multi-car discounts for policyholders insuring more than one vehicle. However, apparently if you include your Tesco Clubcard number is listed on both policies (it must be the same Tesco Clubcard number) and you buy direct then you might receive a discount. We don't have a handle on the size of the discount, unfortunately.

Does Tesco do young driver insurance?

Tesco Bank standard car insurance is for those at least 21 years old, but Tesco Bank Box Insurance is special black box insurance for those aged 17 to 35. This is underwritten by Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance UK Limited.

With this policy, they'll install a black box in your car and the device shows Tesco Bank how you drive. You can log into your own online portal to track your driving, buy top-up miles, etc. Drivers choose to take out a 6,000, 8,000, or 10,000 mile policy depending on how much driving you expect to do (but you can get top-up miles if needed).

In our opinion this black box policy is less appealing than some other options in the market, due to needing installation of a physical black box that can take up to 14 days to install. Having a physical black box also leads to higher cancellation fees, e.g. up to £90. Some other options rely on an app which can be simpler to set up and make tracking of your driving easier as well.

How do I change my car with Tesco car insurance?

Changing your car with Tesco car insurance can be done in a few steps via your online account. And if you make the change online, you won't have to pay the £25 administration fee. BUT, as with all car insurance, changing your car might cause your premium to change. This is normal (e.g. if you're changing to a more valuable car, your premium will naturally increase). Here are the steps to change your car online with Tesco car insurance:

  • Log in, select the policy you want to change and then click 'View policy'.
  • From the menu, click 'make changes' then select which kind of change you want.
  • From the menu page under 'Your car' , click 'Change your car'.
  • Select the date you want your change to take effect from.
  • Read the statements carefully and click 'Confirm' if you'd like to go ahead.
  • Enter your new registration and click 'Find my car'.
  • If the vehicle details are correct click 'next'. If the details are not correct, please select 'This is not my car' and manually enter the correct details.
  • Select 'next', then you'll see a summary of the changes you want to make.
  • Click 'save and get quote' (don't worry, this doesn't execute the change, it only gets you a quote. You can abandon the change on the next screen.)
  • You'll see the cost to make the change and the option of adding any optional extras.
  • If you want to proceed with the change, click 'Go to checkout'. Otherwise, click 'Back to your account'.

That's it! It's pretty straightforward to switch your car with Tesco car insurance.
