Tesco Bank Car Insurance Overall Review
Tesco Bank car insurance offers a solid set of features and a 5-star defaqto rating, but be aware that customer ratings highlight some issues with customer service, the online systems and price rises on renewals.
If you are a loyal Tesco shopper and like the idea of having Tesco Bank car insurance, there are a few ways to save money on your policy. While it's good to check prices at comparison sites, and you should to compare price, it's worth noting that for those buying direct, you'll get Motor Legal Protection included as standard and Clubcard Members are guaranteed a discount. Whether or not that discount is enough depends on the prices and how other rates in the market compare for your profile.
We took a look at what's covered by Tesco comprehensive car insurance bought from their website, and found that cover is solid and includes most "must have" categories (according to the Money Advice Service) as standard—however key cover needs to be purchased separately. (NCD is, as usual, an add on feature as well.)
Accommodation cover if you're stranded after an insured accident is a bit low (£150 max) but otherwise they offer a pretty good set of features as you can see in the table below, which compares the features as mentioned on the Tesco website to what you'd ideally get from a good policy.

Is Tesco Car Insurance any good? Tesco Bank car insurance gets 5 out of 5 stars from Defaqto, which is an indication of the features provided by Tesco car insurance. While we agree that Tesco car insurance rates well for features, their customer reviews are a mixed bag. Please keep in mind that the Trustpilot and Reviews.co.uk ratings are based on Tesco Bank as a whole, which includes home insurance, travel money, credit cards, etc. We've read through hundreds of reviews to see what real customers have to say about their car insurance specifically. Here's what we found:

Tesco Bank has only earned 1.4 stars out of 5 at Trustpilot, with 8 out of 10 customers giving Tescobank just 1 star indicating a bad experience. Here is a sample of the more common complaints:
"Absolute disgrace with the Auto Renew—if I hadn't noticed this, I would have been charged for insurance I did not want. It says on my account online that you can switch off at any time- the ONLY way you can do ths is write to them—is this 1970?—or call their call centre and hang on for half an hour for them to answer. A disgrace in this day and age that you cannot do this online. "
"If you had the misfortune of buying any add ons (Breakdown cover, key cover etc) from them along with your insurance, upon cancellation of policy they make you pay for these 'add ons' in full and CANCEL them as well."
Note: the last complaint is related to no refund on add ons when you cancel a policy—this is quite common in the industry and not unique to Tesco.

On the other hand, customers rate Tesco with a higher score of 3.6 out of 5 stars on Reviews.co.uk. Reading the reviews, we noticed complaints about online systems, inconsistencies regarding rates going up at renewal and unhelpful customer service. Tesco Bank Car Insurance Charges and Fees
Tesco charges £40 to cancel your policy after the initial 14-day window, but doesn't charge a fee to cancel during the cooling off period. Changes such as adding a driver or a change of address cost £25 to make over the phone and are free to make online through the customer portal.
