Car Licence Statistics in the East Midlands

We analysed data from the Department for Transport to find neighborhoods in the East Midlands with the biggest increase in cars over the past five years. These areas will feel noticeably busier at rush hour and residents may struggle to find parking more than they did a few years ago. In the five years ending Q3 2023, the number of cars in the East Midlands increased from 2,428,505 to 2,537,328. Residents have to content with an additional 108,823 cars on the road now—4.5% more than five years ago.

Areas of the East Midlands with Significantly More Cars

Nearly every area in the East Midlands saw an increase in the number of cars in the five years heading into 2024.

Leicestershire had the biggest raw increase in licenced cars in the five years ending Q3 2023, rising by 28,535 from 380,147 to 408,682, a rise of 7.5%. But in terms of a percentage increase, Harborough (an area within Leicestershire) had the largest increase of 27.4% (rising from 54,032 to 68,838 cars).

Only two areas lost cars over this 5-year period: Derby (down 1.3% to 117,573 cars) and Erewash, within Derbyshire (down 3.1% to 57,976 cars).
