Endsleigh Car Insurance Overall Review
Originally started in 1965 by NUS (National Union of Students) to support affordable insurance for students, Endsleigh was voted "Best Student Insurance Provider" at the Insurance Choice Awards 2019 (yet again!). Endsleigh specialises in a wide range of cover for students and other young drivers, as well as short term car insurance (often needed by students when they're home for the holidays):

While Endsleigh's Loop black box policies provide 5-star Defaqto-rated coverage for students, their regular comprehensive policies are lighter on some features than competing plans (and only rated 3 Defaqto stars). For example, their comprehensive regular car insurance doesn't provide accommodation if your car is involved in an accident, you can't drive it and you're far from home, but their Loop policies do. They also don't include any key cover as standard on regular policies, but do provide some cover on Loop policies (on both you can buy an add on key coverage with a higher level of protection). Endsleigh insurance has earned a solid 4.2 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot from over 2,700 customers. But 18% of reviews are 'Bad'—how big a problem is this? Well, it's actually an improvement from a year ago when 27% of reviews were 'Bad'. Now 59% of customers rate the service as 'Excellent' awarding them 5 out of 5 stars.
We dug into the reviews to look for common themes. Negative reviews commonly mentioned difficulties with the online customer portal, admin fees and high renewal rates.

"Last year was £668.15 this year's quote is £1179.29.
As have now reached the age of 25, and had no accidents or offences, I expected to see a good discount... My quotes with others are all in the region of £450 to £500 so easy to see the failure on Endsleigh's part."
"Absolutely useless. After more than a week of long phone calls We still haven’t got our new policy documents either by email, in my daughters account, or as promised, by post. I'm fed up with phoning. I've tried resetting PW, or using a number they gave over the phone for a user ID. Nothing works. All nice people in call centre but it’s still not sorted."
"I called endsleigh to cancel my policy a day after it was automatically renewed. I was told I would have to pay a cancellation fee of £30 to have it cancelled. Imagine less than 24hrs and I had sent them proof that I had already got a better deal with another provider."
"Sadly I was not impressed that Endsleigh failed to inform me that my insurance payment had not gone through. This led to the embarrassment of me being stopped by the police for driving an uninsured car. I hope it will never happen again."
Many companies charge fees to cancel a car insurance policy or make changes. These can seem unfair, so staying ahead of a renewal and declining or turning off 'auto renew' so your policy doesn't renew if you don't want it to can help you avoid some of these fees.

We noticed a wide spread of customer experiences, with most people either having a great experience or a terrible one—fewer people had a neutral experience. Common complaints include long wait times with customer service and renewal prices being significantly higher, so be on the look out for this should you choose to buy insurance from Endsleigh.
