Admiral Home Insurance Review: What You Need to Know

Admiral offers three tiers of home contents insurance—a basic policy ("Admiral"), a mid-tier plan ("Admiral Gold") and a premium plan ("Admiral Platinum") that are available just for buildings, just for contents or as combined buildings and contents insurance.

Extras such as Accidental Damage, Personal Possessions, Home Emergency and Family Legal Protection are available to purchase as add-on features to lower tier plans, if you'd like a customized policy. This can be useful for keeping premium costs under control if you only want one or two add-ons, not the fully inclusive Admiral Platinum plan. Add-on costs are detailed below.

One feature we like is that your Personal Possessions (included in Platinum plans and optional extra on basic and Gold plans) are protected when you're abroad for up to 60 days. This feature can save you anywhere from £3 to £25 on a separate valuables add on for your travel insurance policy.

If you move house with a professional removals company while on an Admiral policy, your contents will be covered for accidental loss or damage during the move and whilst in storage for up to 7 days (excluding money, high risk items, etc. and breakables like china unless they were packed by professionals).

Admiral Home Insurance Price Comparison

We found that Admiral's basic and Gold home insurance plans cost roughly 38% and 8% less than the market average, respectively. Admiral Platinum plans are around 13% more than market, as they include higher cover levels and more benefits like Accidental Damage, Personal Possessions, Home Emergency and Family Legal Protection that can would cost around £88 if bought individually as add-on features, for our sample property.

We gathered pricing data from the Admiral website to give you a general idea of how Admiral home insurance quotes compare to others in the market. For the purposes of this exercise, we quoted for a 35-year-old policyholder living in a mortgaged, 2-bedroom home in OX11. Insurance quotes can vary significantly from day to day and according to your individual details, so please just use the following data for educational purposes only; your quotes may reflect a large degree of variation. Additionally, insurance policies across different companies can be difficult to compare directly, as they can vary in terms of excess, cover amounts, etc.

Here's how Admiral home insurance prices compare to market average premiums

Admiral gives the option to choose your variable excess amounts, which is paid in addition to the compulsory excess in the event of a valid claim. A policy with a higher excess will have a lower premium, because you're committing to pay more towards any valid claims. While a lower premium is certainly enticing, before signing up for a policy with a higher excess be sure you'd be comfortable paying your contribution in the event of a valid claim.

FAQs

Admiral can combine your home and car insurance under what's called a "MultiCover" policy, which can accommodate up to 7 cars. Homes and cars can be added whenever you want—they don't need to have the same renewal dates.
Admiral home insurance can't be cancelled online; you'll need to call customer services at 0333 220 2003. Admiral home insurance costs £25 to cancel during the 14-day cooling off period and £39.50 to cancel afterwards. Plus if you've made a claim the whole premium might be due.
Mobile phones may be covered away from home if you have personal possessions cover (which covers valuables away from the home). And if 'Accidental damage (III) Contents' appears on your policy documents then you may have cover at home via contents accident damage cover. But mobile phones are not covered under the office equipment section of contents cover. Check the terms and conditions of your policy to learn more.
There is no excess to pay on an Admiral home emergency claim.
Theft of contents from locked outbuildings is covered on Gold and Platinum home contents policies, but excluded from basic Admiral policies.
Admiral home insurance covers emergency work to make a temporary repair to your boiler if you have the Gold or Platinum policies. On Gold policies, this is provided through the included "Boiler Emergency" cover (which can be upgraded to Home Emergency cover). On Platinum policies, boiler cover is included as part of Home Emergency cover (which is included). Home Emergency cover can be added to basic Admiral policies as well, which will provide emergency boiler cover. Admiral's Home Emergency and Boiler Cover are provided by Sedgwick International UK.
