Dog & Cat MRI Locations in UK

Due to the high cost of buying and setting up an MRI machine, there are only 32 permanent facilities in the UK that provide MRIs for dogs and cats. We've researched the market to find MRI facilities around the UK, to help you find an MRI near you. We'll also explain how mobile MRIs work, which can be a help if you live very far from a permanent facility.

MRI Locations for Dogs and Cats

Use our map below to find a permanent MRI centre near you. Those with pet insurance underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance (RSA) should look for a centre that's part of the RSA Preferred Network—by using a referral vet who isn't part of the RSA network, you may need to pay £200 of the referral. We've highlighted the RSA MRI sites with purple pins in the map below; MRI sites not in the RSA referral network appear as grey pins.

How Mobile MRIs Work

When you arrive at the scanning site, your pet will first receive a physical examination and perhaps blood tests to ensure they're fit to receive anesthesia, which is necessary to ensure your pet stays still during the MRI or CT scan.

The scans last 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the number of body parts to be scanned and scans required. These scans help your veterinary surgeon to reach an accurate diagnosis of your pet's illness or injury. In most cases, pets can go home after a few hours once their bodies have processed the anesthesia.

For information on what you'll need to pay for an MRI, please see our article on Average Cost of an MRI Scan for a Dog or Cat.
