Who is Suited to a Barclaycard?

Before you apply, you can check to see how likely you are to be accepted by completing Barclaycard's eligibility checker. Before that, however, here is some guidance as to who Barclaycards are most suitable for:

  • Aged 21 or over
  • No IVAs, CCJs or been declared bankrupt in the past six years
  • At least four years' experience of managing credit
  • Permanent UK address for at least three months
  • Have a personal income of more than £20,000 per annum
  • Always make payments on time
  • Able to afford repayments on outstanding credit commitments

Comparing Barclaycard Credit Cards to Other Similar Cards

If you want to know if any of the cards mentioned above are right for you, it can help to know about competing cards. Below, we highlight a few cards that offer similar functionality, in order to help you make an informed decision.

For Purchases Abroad: Creation Everyday Credit Card

Consider this if you want a card to use overseas.

Purchase Rate (variable) 12.9%
0% on Purchases for up to n/a
0% on Balance Transfers for up to n/a
Initial Balance Transfer Fee none
FX Fee none
Cash Fee none

The Creation Everyday Credit Card is a solid travel credit card for use overseas, particularly if you want to withdraw cash from ATMs. The Everyday card doesn’t charge a fee on non-sterling purchases or cash withdrawals while you're overseas. The defining feature is the low 12.9% variable interest rate on non-sterling cash withdrawals. This feature is valuable because, like most credit cards, interest on cash withdrawals starts accruing immediately and can lead to significant charges when you get back from holiday if you're not careful.

For New Credit: Marbles Credit Card

Consider this if you have weak or poor credit.

Purchase Rate (variable) 34.9%
0% on Purchases for up to n/a
0% on Balance Transfers for up to n/a
Initial Balance Transfer Fee 0.03
FX Fee 2.95%
Cash Fee 3% (min £3)

The Marbles Credit Card is another good option for those with poor credit looking for a credit card. Free alerts can help users stay on top of their finances as they work to improve their credit rating. Before applying, you can use the FastCheck tool, an eligibility checker that tells you your likelihood of being accepted without harming your credit score. Eligibility checkers are useful to help you avoid hard searches (that occur when you apply) that result in a denied application.

If you have no credit history in the UK, this card can be useful for demonstrating that you can handle credit responsibly. This card does charge a high 34.9% variable interest rate, unsurprisingly, so try to pay down the full balance every month to avoid interest charges. Like all credit-builder cards, be sure to pay (at least) the monthly minimum payment on time and stay within your credit limit. The minimum credit limit on the Marbles card is £250, but is reviewed after 3 months (i.e., you could get a credit limit increase on your 4th statement).
