Getting travel insurance may not cover your gadgets the way you hope. Here are 5 top tips to help make sure you get the gadget cover you need, in case your mobile, tablet or laptop is lost, stolen or damaged when you're on holiday.

  1. Home contents cover

Before worrying about getting gadget cover through travel insurance, check the terms of any home contents cover you already possess. You might find that your gadgets are already covered when you travel through your home cover. In that case you may not need to pay for optional gadget cover.

  1. Buy travel insurance with gadget cover

Most of the time, gadgets aren’t included under the Valuables section of travel cover. In that case, you’ll need to ensure proper Gadget cover. Some plans may offer this as standard, or it may be an optional extra. Either way, be sure to read the fine print to see what you're covered for, and what you're not. Plans offering Gadget cover as standard may provide the option to increase the amount of cover, should you need to.

  1. Check “per-item” limits

This will come as a surprise, but £2,000 of Gadget cover won’t protect a £2,000 gadget. Every plan we’ve studied imposes a "per-item" limit that is lower than the total amount of gadget cover. So a plan with £2,000 of total gadget cover might have a £500 per-item limit, for example. Keep this "inner limit" (that is, the per-item limit) in mind when choosing suitable cover, to be sure you have enough protection for each item you'll take with you.

  1. Tally up the value of gadgets for everyone

Unlike most other categories of travel insurance cover, Gadget cover limits are typically “per policy” not “per person”. This means that optional Gadget cover with a £2,000 limit will cover up to £2,000 of gadgets in total for all insured people on your policy (e.g., your whole family).

  1. Pay the right price

Once you decide how much cover you need, use your research on optional gadget cover prices to have an idea of how much you should expect to pay for cover.
