Best Virgin Money Credit Cards

Virgin Money specializes in credit cards with 0% interest periods for purchases, balance transfers and money transfers—there's also the Virgin Atlantic rewards credit cards for frequent fliers to earn perks like free flights and upgrades.

Most of the Virgin Money credit cards offer a combination of 0% promotional periods, for varying lengths of time and with different transfer fees. Virgin Money usually has at least ten different combinations on offer. Since the offers change so frequently we'll refer you straight to Virgin Money for the latest offers. Below, we'll explain how the different types of cards work and what's unique about them.

Virgin Money's Credit Cards

Virgin has a wide selection of credit cards for balance transfers, money transfers and purchases. Here are some feature unique to these cards:

  • Transfer Window: Promotional periods are valid for transfers made within 60 days of account opening.
  • Promotional Periods: Successful applicants will get the stated promotional period on some cards (as opposed to a shorter period of time for those with worse credit ratings).
  • Card Checker: Virgin Money performs a soft credit check to tell you your odds of being accepted, without affecting your credit rating.

TOP TIP: Always pay on time. You receive the promotional 0% rates until the period ends, so long as you pay at least the minimum monthly payment by its due date. Use a direct debit if that helps to get your monthly payments in on time.

All Around Virgin Card

Virgin Money's All Around credit card is designed with both balance transfers (to manage existing debt) and a 0% interest period (to keep interest low on new purchases). The All Around card offers moderate length 0% promotional period on purchases and balance transfers. You'll pay a higher balance transfer fee than you'd pay on a similar duration balance transfer card that doesn't have a long purchases period—so only go for this if you need 0% period for both functions. Otherwise, you might overpay on the balance transfer fee.

There is also a money transfer option, which deposits cash directly into your current account. Just as a balance transfer can help with credit card debt, a money transfer can clear non-credit card debt, like an overdraft, pay-day loans or personal loans. Try to pay back as much of the outstanding amounts as possible by the end of the promotional period, as your balances will start accruing interest at that point.

  • 0% on purchases for a set duration

  • 0% on money transfers for a set duration, subject to a money transfer fee

No Fee (Short-Duration) Balance Transfer

Virgin Money's no-balance-transfer-fee card offers of shorter 0% promotional period for balance transfers, but you don't need to pay a balance transfer fee on transfers made in the first 60 days. As with all balance transfer cards, try to pay back the entire balance before the 0% promotional period ends, or you'll end up paying the stated interest rate or more on remaining balances

              Choosing a Virgin Money Card

Virgin Money has many purchase, balance transfer and money transfer offers available. The pure number of their offerings can make choosing the right one confusing. We've narrowed the field by selecting cards in each feature group, analyzing fees and 0% promotional periods, but we are not recommending any particular cards. When making your selection, there are a few factors to keep in mind.

              Existing Debt

If you have outstanding credit card balances, you may want to move them to a 0% interest card. Decide how long it will take you to pay back your debt, then choose a card with a 0% balance transfer of suitable length. Keep in mind that you will pay a fee on balances transfers. The longer the 0% promotional period, the higher the fee. The shortest promotional periods often charge no fee.

              Upcoming Purchases

If you have any large purchases coming up - perhaps you are updating your bathroom or anticipate a large car repair bill—then a 0% purchases card is a way to spread the cost over time. You aren't charged interest in the promotional period, letting you pay back your purchases without additional interest charges. Consider the cost of your upcoming purchases and how many months you want as a buffer to pay back the credit card company. A card with a longer 0% purchase period may cost you more indirectly, through a higher balance transfer fee, for instance.

              Decide What You Need

Figure out which factors are most important to your individual financial situation and then focus on cards specializing in these features. Be aware of paying for features that you don't need. For instance, the All Round card will charge a higher balance transfer fee than you'll find on a similar length balance transfer specific card. So if you don't need a 0% purchases period then don't pay for it through a higher balance transfer fee on the All Round card. Read the features carefully before deciding.

              Customer Reviews

Are Virgin Money credit cards any good? The average customer rating for Virgin Money is only 1.4 out of 5 at Trustpilot, which is pretty poor. In fact, 84% of the over 1,000 customer reviews were just 1 star. To see what some of the common customer complaints are, we scoured hundreds of reviews. Here is a representative sample of real customer reviews:

"I’ve had most credit cards on the market. Opened this for a balance transfer was late with the first payment as was organising things. Virgin accepted that was ok and promised me I would keep offers. Now months later I realised I’m being charged interest and they said they won’t uphold complaint or reinstate offers..."

"After registering the card... when I actually tried to pay for the item my payment was declined... Like a lot of customers below I was left in a shop for over two hours on the phone to Virgin being passed from pillow (sic) to post to then finally be told my card was under review and I had to wait 5/7 days..."

"The first time I ever tried to use my card it was declined. I embarrassingly had to tell the cashier I would come back to the shop after spending an hour discussing my television purchase with him..."

"I have spent a combined 4 hours waiting on the helpline in the past 3 days! I basically can sing the tune by heart now! They wont let me access the app, so I cannot see nor pay into it. They ask me to call them to resolve but nobody has been picking up (they claim 24-7 help but thats a LIE!!)..."

Common complaints seem to relate to:

              • First purchases on a new card being declined
              • App not working
              • One missed payment and 0% promotional periods end

              FAQs
