Greece tourist tax – how much is tourist tax for Crete, Corfu, Santorini, Mykonos, Athens, Zante and more

Unfortunately there is no escaping the tourist tax – which is officially called the Climate Resilience Levy.

Formerly called the ‘stayover tax’, the levy was rebranded after the 2024 wildfires which hit several parts of Greece. The money is now collected to help Greece cope with the growing impact of climate change and natural disasters, as well as mass tourism.

Unlike some countries where the charge is capped at a certain number of nights, in Greece, you’ll pay it for every night you stay, whether you're on a quick weekend city break in Athens or a two-week island escape in Zante.

Greece tourist tax

The tourist tax in Greece — officially called the Climate Resilience Levy — applies to all visitors, including Greek citizens, staying in paid accommodation such as hotels, apartments, villas and Airbnbs.

Unlike the Spain tourist tax, it’s charged per room, per night, not per person.

And unlike Spain, and the Portugal tourist tax, it is across the whole country, not just certain popular destinations.

It’s designed to:

  • Fund recovery from wildfires, floods and extreme weather
  • Support emergency services and infrastructure in tourist areas
  • Help the country build long-term climate resilience

The tourist tax has a renewed focus on climate and environmental protection after the devastating wildfires across several parts of Greece in 2024.

As well as hitting mainland areas, the blazes ripped through tourist hotspots Rhodes and Corfu, sparking a mass evacuation of holidaymakers and shining a worldwide spotlight on the climate issues hitting Greece.

Although the exact spending allocation isn’t publicly detailed, the government says the money will go towards sustainability and environmental protection.

However, critics say it is simply another way to make money from tourists.

How much is tourist tax in Greece?

The amount you pay depends on your accommodation type — for example, a 5-star hotel will cost significantly more in tax than a budget 2-star apartment.

Unlike with the Portugal tourist tax, there is no cap on the number of nights charged, so it can add up quickly if you’re staying for two weeks in pricier accommodation or travelling as a family needing multiple rooms.

The cost depends entirely on the type of accommodation, not the location.

It’s usually paid at check-in or check-out, and isn't always included in your upfront holiday booking price.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what you can expect to pay based on your accommodation type:

Accommodation typeExampleCost per night
1–2 star hotelBasic guesthouse or B&B€1.50
3-star hotelStandard family resort€3.00
4-star hotelUpscale resort or city hotel€7.00
5-star hotelLuxury hotel or spa€10.00
Villa or AirbnbDepends on property category€1.50–€10.00

Short-term lets (like Airbnbs) may fall under varying categories depending on their registration and facilities, so charges can range.

Crete tourist tax

As Greece’s largest island, Crete is a top pick for families and all-inclusive deals — often staying in 3 or 4-star hotels.

That means:

  • A 3-star hotel will cost €3 per night, per room
  • A 4-star hotel pushes that to €7 per night

For a seven-night family holiday in a two-room 4-star hotel, that’s €98 in tourist tax — on top of your usual costs. Use our calculator below to estimate your stay.

Corfu tourist tax

Corfu is a popular destination for cheap family holidays abroad, especially for those booking early or grabbing last-minute package deals. Many Corfu hotels are 3-star and 4-star, with some great value all-inclusives available.

As a reminder:

  • €3/night for 3-star
  • €7/night for 4-star
  • Applies for each room, not per person.

Corfu often ranks among the best destinations for cheap family holidays abroad, but even here the extras can add up.

Santorini tourist tax

Santorini is known for its romantic caldera views and iconic whitewashed cliffside hotels, many of which are luxury 4-star or 5-star properties.

Most accommodation falls into the €7 to €10 per night range. So:

  • A 5-star stay for 7 nights = €70 in tax per room
  • A family needing 2 rooms = €140

It's worth factoring this in, especially if you’re already stretching the budget. We previously reported how Greece ranks among the pricier places for food and drink in our average cost of a holiday abroad roundup.

Mykonos tourist tax

Trendy and upscale, Mykonos is another island where most accommodation is 4 or 5-star, and villa rentals are common - meaning €7–€10 per night in tax is standard.

Regardless of if there are two of you or a group of 10 friends and family, the tourist tax applies as a flat fee for a villa.

Athens tourist tax

In Athens, you’ll find a mix of budget apartments, 3-star hotels, and higher-end city hotels.

Quick examples:

  • Staying in a 2-star city hotel for 5 nights = €7.50 in tax
  • A week in a 4-star hotel = €49 in tax

Whether you’re in town for sightseeing or as a stopover before the islands, the tourist tax applies the same way across the mainland and islands.

Zante tourist tax

Zante (Zakynthos) is known for its beaches, nightlife and package holidays. Accommodation ranges from simple self-catered studios to resort hotels — with 3-star properties the most common among British tourists.

Expect to pay:

  • €3 per night for a typical 3-star family hotel
  • €21 in tourist tax for a week-long stay in one room
  • €42 if your family books two rooms

If you’re booking via a travel agent or online platform, double check if the tax is included in the price — often it isn’t.

Tourist tax Greece 4 star hotel

If you're staying in a 4-star hotel in Greece, you’ll pay €7 per room, per night, every night of your stay.

That means:

  • 7 nights in 1 room = €49
  • 7 nights in 2 rooms = €98

The charge applies whether you’re on the mainland (like Athens or Thessaloniki) or the islands (Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, etc.).
